What!?!?!
Suh! You have insulted my honor! There is no way the U. Of Paris beats my alam mater: William and Mary!!! Virginia was underepresented on that list. A travesty. A mockery. How could UT Austin or the Aggies at A&M beat out W&M and UVa much less all of those California schools! Hell, I didn't even see Georgetown mentioned!! Don't discount those Jesuits! Case Western Reserve? Hell! I'll see your Case Western and raise you a George Mason or a James Madison! Look, I don't want to sound 'Hoakie' or be 'Cavalier', but something smells fishy. Perhaps this is a list of liberal yankee run schools?
I am not a native 'son of Virginia', but this list gets a sound 'Harumph!' from me- I am quite sure Mr. Jefferson would not have approved. Must've been compiled by some carpetbaggers still trying to lord it over on us after the War of Northern Agression! | re: Oh dear oh dear. Only middle rated students would go university in France. We have Grands Ecoles that are not rated by this study. | re: Oh dear oh dear. Academic Ranking of World Universities - 2005.... en>fr fr>en By Whatchamacallit Comments: 34110, member since Fri Nov 14, 2003On Thu Aug 25, 2005 03:59 PM

These lists are very subjective and often cyclical. Harvard is a good school but NOT the best in the world. It is always #1 because...well....it's Harvard.
The technical schools are easier to evaluate. MIT is an amazing "genius factory".

LMAO Mutt!
The war of Northern American aggression?!?! LOLOLOL!!
The study's from China, but it actually comes from St John's University in NYC, or at least St John's is hosting this Chinese University's site or something...
I dunno. Personally I think the list is a bit twisted. Harvard has outstanding non-technical disciplines, but MIT blows them away in anything technical and even Harvard farms out its bio-research students to MIT, though they technically are Harvard students and researchers.
But look where fucking FROGGY is, WAY WAY WAY down the list.

MIT, Harvard, blah, blah, blah. Take your family to visit Cambridge Mass and what do you get? The damn Silas Marner's up there will put your kids in the stockades and slap a scarlet letter on your wife! Visit Williamsburg with the family, and the warm, kind hearted Virginians will give your kids toy muskets and tri-corn hats, they'll give your wife some lovely bolts of fabric and a nice tea set, and you'll get a plug of tobbacco, a jug of corn juice, and a copy of Patrick Henry's 'Give me Liberty or give me death!' speech. Now, where is that factored into the damn list I ask!! | re: Oh dear oh dear. Academic Ranking of World Universities - 2005.... (karma: 1)

LOLOLOL Mutt!
It's NOT MY list, it's St John University's list!
I realize that New York is a Yankee city, is that what you find troubling? That the list was concocted by North American aggressors?!!

Let's talk about what I know :
Any list which ranks Paris VI ahead of Polytechnique, Normale Sup, Centrale, Les Ponts, Les Mines, HEC, ESSEC, Arts et Métiers, Sciences Po, ESCP, Dauphine, Saint-Cyr and 50 other grandes écoles, is a joke.
I assume the rest of the ranking is just as serious.

No surprise there. in late 1990s, I saw 50 to 60 years old people getting $80-100 and hour software jobs after 4 month courses. That was crazy frigging bubble exonomy. Which went bust.
We are talking about normal situation. Besides, in software dev experience is much more important than education. Pretty simple routine occupation. | |

LMAO my university is 34th, well above the french.
So much for the superior education of french. Might explain the 10+% unemployment.

Reston,
Let's talk about what I know :
Then it'll be a very short monologue I should think
Any list which ranks Paris VI ahead of Polytechnique, Normale Sup, Centrale, Les Ponts, Les Mines, HEC, ESSEC, Arts et Métiers, Sciences Po, ESCP, Dauphine, Saint-Cyr and 50 other grandes écoles, is a joke.
I assume the rest of the ranking is just as serious.
RC
But they are listed. Look at the list for european and UK universities here:
ed.sjtu.edu.cn . . .
"Univ Paris 06" on the list is actually "Universite Pierre & Madame Curie"...and it is the highest ranked French University-number 46 in the world and number eight in Europe and UK.
Paris-Sud 11 is number 16 in the Europe and UK list...
University of Strasbourg 1 is number 30 in the Europe and UK list
Ecole Normale Super Paris is number 31 in the Europe and UK list
etc, etc, etc...

Frequently Asked Questions from the survey site:
1. Why are we doing the ranking?
Our original purpose of doing the ranking was to find out the gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities, particularly in terms of academic or research performance. It has been done for our academic interests without any outside support.
Upon the request of colleagues and friends from various countries, we published the ranking on our website and update it annually. We hope our Academic Ranking of World Universities will help you to compare and identify universities worldwide by their academic or research performance.
2. How many universities have we ranked?
We have scanned every university that has any Nobel Laureates, Fields Medals, Highly Cited Researchers, or papers published in Nature or Science. In addition, we scanned major universities of every country with significant amount of articles indexed in major citation indices. In total, we have scanned more than two thousand universities.
Although we publish only the top 500 universities, we have actually ranked more than one thousand universities. We regret that we will not be able to provide you with information on the ranking of universities beyond the top 500.
3. Is our academic ranking objective?
The quality of universities cannot be precisely measured by mere numbers. Therefore, any ranking is controversial and no ranking is absolutely objective. People should be cautious about any ranking including our Academic Ranking of World Universities.
It would be impossible to have a comprehensive ranking of universities worldwide, because of the huge differences of universities in the large variety of countries and the technical difficulties in obtaining internationally comparable data. Our ranking is using carefully selected indicators and internationally comparable data that everyone could check.
4. Are there any problems with the ranking?
There are many methodological and technical problems. Methodological problems include: the proportion of indicators on teaching and services, the weight of per capita performance, the type of institutions (comprehensive or specialized), the language bias in publications, the selection of awards and the experience of award winners. Technical problems include: the definition of institutions, the attribution of publications and awards, and the history of institutions.
For more detailed discussions, please read our paper "Academic ranking of world universities - methodologies and problems", which is a paper presented at the meeting of International Ranking Expert Group and subsequently published in Vol. 30, No 2., 2005 of "Higher Education in Europe"
5. What are the major changes in 2005?
After analyzing the numerous comments and suggestions from all over the world, we have made two major modifications in our ranking of 2005. Articles indexed in Arts & Humanities Index are included for the first time. When calculating the total number of articles indexed in the three citation indices, a special weight of two was introduced for articles indexed in Social Science Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index.
Another thing worthy noting is that both Humboldt University - Berlin and Free University - Berlin were not ranked in 2005. This is because both universities claimed to be the successor of Berlin University before World War II, and they could not agree on how to divide the Nobel prizes won by the old Berlin University.

BALM,
Let's talk about what I know, once again.
Just go at Paris VI and ask any student if he wouldn't prefer to be at Polytechnique, Normale Sup, and so on...
Just go to, say, Harvard, and ask them how many students they warmly welcome, every year, from Normale Sup, Polytechnique, etc, and if they even know that Paris VI exists.
As far as I know, this list is a joke, whatever methods they pretend they use.

The french would do better, if they had an English speaking university. They insist on being crippled with a language that has long been unnecessary.
Me failing english? That's unpossible! |
