Canada Condemns 'Racist' Conan O'Brien TV Show

Canada's government on Friday condemned a show by U.S. late-night television host Conan O'Brien that insulted people in French-speaking Quebec and seemed to suggest everyone in the province was homosexual.

Ottawa and the province of Ontario paid C$1 million ($760,000) to help O'Brien -- who appears on the NBC television network -- bring his show to Toronto for a week to boost the city's profile after a deadly SARS outbreak last year.

But the federal government said O'Brien had gone far too far with the show broadcast on Thursday in which he went to Quebec, a province which has had separatist governments for much of the last 20 years and is a delicate political topic in Canada.

"We want to disassociate ourselves from the comments which were broadcast last night because we do not support them in any way," junior government minister Mauril Belanger told Parliament.

At one point in the show, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog -- a hand puppet that is a regular on the show -- said to a Quebecer: "You're French, you're obnoxious and you no speekay English." It told another: "I can smell your crotch from here."

O'Brien's team were also shown replacing street signs in the province with those that read "Quebecqueer Street" and "Rue des Pussies."

Alexa McDonough, a legislator for the left-leaning New Democrats, described the program as "racist filth" and "utterly vile" and demanded the government seek the return of the C$1 million subsidy.

"There may be those who would say, 'Isn't this interfering with freedom of expression?' It's not interfering to say we will not publicly fund this kind of vile, vicious hatemongering," McDonough told reporters.

Belanger did not commit to asking for the money back. No one at NBC was immediately available for comment.

The complaints over the puppet's comments come on the heels of a similar uproar following criticism of European French-Canadian hockey players on CBC television by the country's best-known sports commentator, Don Cherry.

The "Late Night" show, which taped in Toronto all this week and featured guests such as Jim Carrey and Mike Myers , was broadcast in Canada by CHUM television, which said it regretted any offense that may have been caused.

"We offer our apology and assurance that it is never our intention to air programing that offends any of our viewers," the station said in a statement.

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog has landed in trouble before, most famously when it had an altercation with rap singer Eminem at a music awards show in 2002.

The so-called jokes proved to be nothing more than an ill-advised attempt at amalgamating stereotypes of French-Canadians and the French from France. After a year of barbs and offensive jokes in the American Media, Conan O’Brien’s show has proven that French-Bashing is alive and well.

The offensive jokes were mainly about body odour «I can tell your French – I can smell your crotch from here», homophobia «Quebecqueer Street», women-bashing «Rue de Pussies» and linguistic arrogance «This is North-America, speak English».

Most damaging of all, the images of Torontonians cheering the skits could have serious consequences for Quebec-Ontario relations.

Peter Soumalias, a Toronto Businessman, President & CEO of Symas Holdings Corporation and Chairman of Canada's Walk of Fame was in full denial mode. In an interview with the National Post, Soumalias stated: «It was funny and this was about comedy». He went on to say he didn’t expect a backlash.

I happened upon this site today after doing a search on google for info on the pukes that defaced allied war graves. Magotry is a word that comes to mind..

I laughed my ass off at the Conan show the other night which pretty much sums up the non-french speaking lower class in this Canada.

This is the only place I know where apartheid still goes on. We are forced to see french speaking persons as different, hell it's even legislated that we have to. This is the only free country I know where you get arrested for having a non-french sign in your window.

You know why Canada didn't go to Iraq?? How bout a french dominated federal government. I live in the West and when Iraq started up, there were more American Flags in my town then there were Canadian. To me stopping a murderous madman that intentionally kills/rapes/tortures/gasses/melts/beheads/boils/debowels women and children is pretty much a reason to kick his butt, weapons of mass destruction or not.

Some day all this fun stuff will lead to a rather messy civil war in Canada, and if WWI and WII are any indication it's going to be messy as though Canadians are thought to be "nice" we are absolutely freaken brutal when it comes to war. I've read a few German Army reports/docs and it appears the Germans were absolutely terrified of Canadian troops. I think my first moment of dislike with respect to Q-Bec was during the olympics some years back.. You see the frog-skins.. er fore-skins from Q-bec had/have? the choice of either representing Canada, or representing France there... Well some of the athleteurs went the way of representing France, I think it was a pair of figeur skateurs.. though they were trained on Canadianeur soil and with Canadianeur le'funding that my old man was paying out of his pockette while working on a frozenette oil-rig in the middle of Alberta. So ever since then, they can take a long hard suckeur on my dingus though that might not be a good thing to say as most would probably welcome the opportunity.

I hate no one, I just savagely dislike them. I hate buying a frozen pizza and having to get out a magnifying glass to read the instructions as everything has to be so small because it has to be adorned in both franch and english. I wonder what would happen if a company only printed english on their product..
