MacArthur didn't follow Orange, which is primarily why so many Americans were captured and enslaved by the Japanese during thier invasion of the Islands.
Orange called for a strategic withdrawl to the fortress of Corregidor, an old Spanish-era fortress that was virtually impenitrable. Aside from a few structures on the surface, the main works of the facility were underground and there were no landing sites on, about or around the island. Whomever held the fortress held the bay and ultimately the large port facilities.
From there the forces were to hold out until the surface fleet arrived and dueled the Japanese fleet. An outdated and ultimately unusable plan at the time but it would have saved thousands of lives.
MacArthur ordered our boys to hold fast, stranded them and left a small radio company as the sole defense of the fortress while he slipped away with the few ships of the Asiatic fleet. He expected the Phil Militia to hold out for months so he could stage a triumphment return and satisfy his elephantine ego. For this alone, I despise him.
Retreating troops made encampments on the far shores, with no way of transporting to the facility and were strafed and bombed by Japanese airmen. The people manning the fortress surrended to the Japanese in the hopes of ending the suffering of the servicemen being butchered, but what we know as the Bataan death march was their future.
Thank you Gen. MacArthur, may you rot in hell. |
