Euro was worth ca 0.82 when launched, and now it is ca 1.29 ... so, we got richer compared to Americans and with stronger currency, we could buy you off. If you were worth it that is
Err, no.
The euro got stronger - mostly "thanks" to ECB strangling eurozone economies. But that doesen't mean that individuals got richer. |

Dollar near 7-mth high, France vote looms
Fri May 27, 2005 02:45 AM ET
By Naomi Tajitsu
TOKYO (Reuters) - The dollar hovered near a seven-month high against the euro on Friday as strong U.S. economic data and expectations that France would reject a vote on an EU constitution helped the dollar to maintain its rally.
While the euro has been battered on bets about the outcome of Sunday's referendum, analysts said it was a secondary driver of recent weakness in the currency, which has taken the brunt of economic growth concerns in the euro zone.
"The euro selling at the moment is part of the bigger trend of euro weakness, particularly against the dollar due to interest rate differentials," said Kikuko Takeda, currency analyst at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi.
Euro zone rates have stayed at 2 percent since mid-2003, while a tightening campaign in the United States since June has taken rates to 3 percent from 1 percent.
Revised data released on Thursday showed the U.S. economy expanded at an annual rate of 3.5 percent in the first quarter, supporting views that the economy was on track for steady growth and that rates would keep raising at a "measured" pace.
"Taking away this referendum, the euro is in a down move anyway and the dollar's strengthening across the board," said Luke Waddington, head of forex dealing at Royal Bank of Scotland.
Polls show rejectionists leading in France and in the Netherlands, which votes on Wednesday. If the treaty is rejected, it could raise doubts about the bloc's future, analysts say.
At 0554 GMT the euro bought around $1.2525, only a tad up from late trading levels in New York, where it fell as far as $1.2495, the lowest since October.
The dollar fetched around 1.2345 Swiss francs, not far from a seven-month high of around 1.2380 francs.
Sterling was at $1.8235, in sight of the seven-month low of $1.8186.

if the french government rigs the elections and yes wins the euro could go up, otherwise its dropping.
bazoom had a good question about how some of us me included bashed the frogs as the euro rose and now as it drops. We were right about how the euro would hurt the export dependant france and germany more than the US, and would actually benefit the US in many ways. Now the euro is coming down because the damage has been done, the euro zone economies are in desperation mode and the political chaos from the referendum are making people flee the euro.
hope that clears it up for you morons. I have to say watching it drop is alot more fun, you don't have to give economic lessons to euro trash claiming the high euro is great for the EU lmao. |

I have to say that Confederate script is worth a lot of money. You should check out ebay listings. The Euro is like a coupon for kitty litter or any other product in the Sunday paper. In the fine print under the discount amount, the amount somebody would pay you to take this monopoly euro, in the fine print you read that it is worth 1/863rd of a cent. |

Index. Specifically the S&P500 e-mini futures contracts. Right now the euro-traders are being bearish on everything. For that reason I shall take a long position in the morning. The Chicago Merc pit will, once again, feast on the money the Europeans are leaving on the table right now. Once the pit opens at 8:30 CDT it will be like a flock of sea gulls finding an unattended lunch on a beach.

Euro Drops to Lowest Since October on French Treaty Rejection
May 31 (Bloomberg) -- The euro fell to a seven-month low against the dollar on concern France's rejection of a European Union constitution will slow the region's economic integration. Polls show Dutch voters will reject the treaty tomorrow.
``There's a belief that the European project is under threat,'' said Mark Austin, head of global currency research in London at HSBC Holdings Plc, Europe's biggest bank by market value. ``There's no obvious reason why the euro will stop here given that sentiment is so negative.''
The euro extended its slide after French President Jacques Chirac replaced Jean-Pierre Raffarin as prime minister with his former chief of staff, Dominique de Villepin. The currency weakened to the lowest in more than four months compared with the yen and declined against more than a dozen major currencies, including the British pound and Swiss franc.
Against the dollar, the euro dropped 1.1 percent to $1.2336 at 10:01 a.m. in New York from $1.2475 yesterday, and touched $1.2310, the lowest since Oct. 13, according to currency-dealing system EBS. The euro may fall to $1.22 in two days, said Austin. It's down about 4 percent in May as reports also showed European growth is trailing the U.S. expansion for a fourth year.
``De Villepin is viewed by the market as a negative because he is a close ally of Chirac and seen as a strong supporter of the French economic model,'' said Ian Stannard, a currency strategist at BNP Paribas SA in London.
The dollar remained higher after U.S. industry reports showed Chicago-area business slowed in May, while consumer confidence rose.
`Scary' Backdrop
NO shit like we couldnt smell that coming
Today is the first full day of trading in foreign-exchange markets this week following national holidays yesterday in the U.K. and U.S. Hedge funds are among the biggest sellers of the euro today, said Austin at HSBC, which according to Euromoney magazine is the fourth-biggest currency trader. |

Sure all the banks in SE Asia are waiting until the exchange rate hits some magical value so that then they can all dump their euro holdings at the same time and get the least in exchange for them.
I swear economics and finance are totally untaught in Europe. |
