The EU is not a country. Just a trading block that is falling apart.

Please note that Countries having McDonalds restaurants won all of the Olympic Gold medals. Since McDonalds is American owned then, by Atlantian Logic ©, the US won all the gold medals.

Our way of life has triumphed.

UncleMeat
What is this? This comparison is not good at all!

Image hotlink - 'http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABPub/2004/08/29/2002019567.jpg'

Tomorrow will be the last day of these Olympics, already.
The bets will be closed tomorrow morning 8:00 Paris and Turin time.
Only 2 competitions left, 6 medals to give:

- The Hockey final, and we already know that Gold and Silver will go to a EU country as the final will oppose Finland to Sweden tomorrow.
We will soon know if the Bronze will go to Russia or the Czech Republic as the Final B is taking place at this moment.

- The 50 km men cross-country skiing.

Therefore, it shouldn't be difficult to guess the current final EU countries medals tally.

At this time, the count is:

Image hotlink - 'http://www.oxfamsol.be/fr/IMG/gif/eu_flag.gif'

Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctsgold.gif' 39 (50%)
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctssilver.gif' 35 (45%)
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctsbronze.gif' 36 (46%)
Total: 110 (47%)

Previous bets:

1/ ArthurH
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctsgold.gif' 39
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctssilver.gif' 32
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctsbronze.gif' 38
Total: 109

2/ JeanV
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctsgold.gif' 40
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctssilver.gif' 35
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctsbronze.gif' 36
Total 111

My indicative February 12th forecast:
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctsgold.gif' 40
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctssilver.gif' 33
Image hotlink - 'http://chess.emrald.net/pics/ctsbronze.gif' 37
Total: 110

We've all been slightly pessimistic, as we now know that the EU will get a minimum of 112 medals tomorrow afternoon, more likely between 113 and 116.

This means up to 40 easy Ks to win for the ones who will place bets from now until tomorrow morning.

Basically, you just have to give 4 figures: Gold, Silver, Bronze and Total.

(See rules: www.fuckbritain.com . . .)

Good luck

Do you have "Mc Donald's" writen in golden letters on your passport like we have European Union?

Hehehe, maybe you do, actually!
Or maybe you don't even have a passport!
Why bother, as you probably never leave your hilariously vulgar family room!!! :D

The Olympics are almost over now, Uncle.
So, at this point, either you play, either you shaddup and go pollute another thread with your mumbling, ok?

But what do you do with medals won for Germany before 1945 or 1918, by a Germany that has nothing to do with what it is today?
And what do you do for other countries in a similar situation.

If you look just at Germany, and just for the 1945-2006 period, Altes' objection id valid.
It's no longer valid in a 1896-2006 world-wide context, therefore it couldn't be applied in Wikipedia's table

Although I acknowledge that applying medals to countries that underwent sometimes traumatic political changes, the German case is not as difficult as you obviously assume.

The modern german nation state was proclaimed on January 21st 1871 (you know where, no need to stirr up the old stories) and continues to the present date. Although this state underwent both politicial, constitutionals and territorial changes, it always remained the German nation state.

This is so under German constitutional and public law and also under international treaty law. The international treaties signed by the Kaiserreich were also binding for the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the Federal Republic. Because of this none of these old treaties needed to be signed again a second time by Germany later.

And I presume when any international treaty bearing the signature of a representative of Germany is still considered representing Germany today, we should assume the same for olympic medals won by german athletes for Germany in the past - be it in 1904, 1928, 1936 1964 or today.

And I presume when any international treaty bearing the signature of a representative of Germany is still considered representing Germany today, we should assume the same for olympic medals won by german athletes for Germany in the past - be it in 1904, 1928, 1936 1964 or today.

And, except for 1964, this is exactly what Wikipedia did.
They did count German medals for Germany every time Germany presented a Team Germany: 2nd Reich, Weimar Republic, 3rd Reich, or post-reunification Federal Germany, be it in 1904, 1928, 1936 or today.

Wikipedia gave themselves a rule, and applied it for ALL countries for ALL periods.
Again, ALL country rankings are unofficial anyway.

Little mistake in tonight's table.

Wikipedia, the website where I could go change those numbers right now? They gave themselves a rule that I don't need to worry about, then? Is that what you're saying? Do you ever worry about your honor? Is that important to you? Are you seriously telling Altes, your EU partner and European brother (or is it cousin?), a presumably intelligent person (spelling and grammar hypocrisy notwithstanding), that you don't consider it dishonorable to pretend like there is some kind of major ambiguity regarding what is and is not "German"(an hisorically established and readily identifiable nation and nationality), with regard to her historic Total Olympic medals, resulting in an innaccurate accounting and a subsequently lower ranking than is expected regarding Germany's Total Medal Count

"Wikipedia, the website where I could go change those numbers right now? "

why not ?. a lot of europeans use wikipedia like arguments . and it is probably in germany that it is the most alive !

and one day, you must use a rule to count medals .

one can't say nonetheless that it is the most reliable source .

one can't say nonetheless that it is the most reliable source .

That's my point, simple. I don't consider it at all reliable in this case .

And I find it offensive for Atlantic to resort to questionable ethical methods of "putting down" his fellow European, while simultaneously making Altes' medals both of theirs.

another 30 minutes to place your bets!

And I find it offensive for Atlantic to resort to questionable ethical methods of "putting down" his fellow European, while simultaneously making Altes' medals both of theirs.

Find a better all-times summer+winter medals table from 1896 to 2004 and post it!

This is the only one I found, and I consider Wikipedia as reliable enough to post it.
More reliable than you, who can't give any argument, let alone back it with any source! :D

You would really be foolish to think that it would bother me to post ANY table placing Germany above France.
I perfectly know that it's a larger and more powerful country than we are.

When bashers here were bragging about German economy "going down the drain", especially Brits who are expecting to overpass Germany in the next 10 years, I have always said that I didn't worry for Germany and their fantastic assets that should secure them the top of the European league for ever.
And I see no problem with this!

resulting in an innaccurate accounting and a subsequently lower ranking than is expected

But you have no problem with the situation of Russia/USSR, I can see...
I wonder why....

I say count them all together. They're both Russia.

"I perfectly know that it's a larger and more powerful country than we are"

larger not in superficie and more powerful ,yes, but it depends on the sectors .

they are 80 millions. we are 63 millions.

larger not in superficie

I meant larger population.
Germany is slightly smaller than Montana, and France smaller than Texas.
We both have our own assets.

Are you really from Burkina Faso ? because, yes it never snows there but there are a few mountains, about 2500ft high.

"The EU is not a country. Just a trading block that is falling apart."

You'r wrong Uncle. Let's take a field I think I know well, Aviation. The EU JAA (JAR/OPS/FCL)is the governing body of 25 EUROPEEN COUNTRIES (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Chyprus, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungaria, Ireland, Italy, Lettonia, Lituania, Luxemburg, Malta, Holland, Poland, Portugal, Tchecoslovakia, UK, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, plus 3 other "invités d'honneur": Monaco, Roumania, Turkey). JAA can be compared to the US FAR's.
All EU companies abide with exactly the same rules and regulations? except for a few "," or "." and as from jan 2008 even those "," and "." will be the same. Furthermore, in 2008 the only language allowed between the whole ATC system and any airplanes will be English (I mean, let's take for instance Italy: an Italian ATC controller will have to talk English to any foreign aircraft like before, but also to any Italian aircraft in it's airspace). It will not be the same rule when an Air Canada flies to Montreal.

A German doctor has less problem working in France than a US doctor with a North Dakota diploma wishing to work in California. Same shit if you are a lawyer.
My EU pilote license is the same than the one issued in any other JAR/FCL country.
When I was in the USA I had to change my driver's license when I moved from Florida to Missouri.

in 2008 the only language allowed between the whole ATC system and any airplanes will be English

What a coincidence - same as here in the U.S.

When I was in the USA I had to change my driver's license when I moved from Florida to Missouri.

That's because Driver's licenses are issues by the State, not the Federal Government.

As far as the EU being one country, don't make me laugh. Just look how the pointy-heads such as Atlantic view their neighboring countries. "Ha ha, our faggy little cars beat some neighboring country's faggy little cars in a faggy little race. Ha."

The United States has had a constitution for more than 2 centuries that we have always, and will always defend to the death.

How's that EU constitution coming along?

Non? No constitution? Wouldn't fight for something you don't have? Oh but you would bobsled or ski for your trading bloc?

OK, well, that's nice.
