because of these bombings the Germans have long regarded themselves as ONLY victims of the WW2 and have forgotten that they had been criminals
I don't know about the Germans, but have you seen the Japanese movie
Rhapsody in August?
When the grandchildren go to see the war memorials in Nagasaki, Shinichiro, points out there's no memorial from the United States, and his elder sister, Tami, replies, "Of course not, they're the ones who dropped the bombs." Throughout the entire movie, viewers are hammered with the message that the Japanese were the victims of WWII and it is the responsibility of Americans to show humility and regret if they're ever to be forgiven. I know this isn't believed by all Japanese but I've met a number of otherwise extremely nice Japanese who do. Somehow, Pearl Harbor, the rape of Nanking, Japanese treatment of POWs and Unit 731 are all forgotten because of two bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Brits still remember the Blitz and it sounds like Germans still remember Dresden. So high-intensity civilian bombings don't seem like the sort of things people are prepared to forget, even long after a war has ended.
