As a precursor to new changes that will allow members to rate - (or bury) comments they don't like, I'm going to lift restrictions we've had in place about making fun of 9/11 and soldier deaths. Those restrictions, though contrary to our mission of protecting speech, seemed appropriate when 9/11 and the start of the Iraqi war were fresh in our minds.

Remember though that TOS violations (publishing private info), spamming, and tasteless pictures are not akin to free speech and will get you banned (create your own site if you want that). Comments that are not on-topic to a given thread may be considered spam.

Basically, that means if you want to make fun of soldier deaths or 9/11, do it in your own damn thread. Don't spam that trash in someone else's thread, and don't overdo threads on that topic. I think those types of threads are disgusting, but not allowing them for either "side" troubles me more.

In several weeks, we'll have new features that let members rate down or bury comments. We're still working out ways to ensure that this doesn't censor speech. Maybe even add a prediction market game or two.

Shon

Do you mean rate down a 'post' or a 'poster'. If it's the later then it's going to get a bit ugly in here :]

I agree with the rule change. Free speech works both directions, and it will allow us to sift through the frogs quicker if the really assinine ones are allowed to say whatever they want.

P.S. When your done fixing the important stuff, please look into bringing back the list of threads that have been K'ed. My vainity demands that I find out what was given karma, and who gave it too me.

In case you're looking for input, I don't like the idea.

This website, and the free speech it has, is protected by 2 million American men and women who risk their lives in nearly every corner of the world for us.

To mock them, or to cheer their deaths, is not protected speech. It is criminal subversion, and just because our government fails to enforce those laws does not mean that we should do the same.

I understand that burying comments has the effect of quieting these things, but rest assured that mid-afternoon France time this place will be one big stinking hate-America-fest.

You see brother tookie ?

I'm already a step ahead of the game, not unusual for us Maritimers though.

www.fuckfrance.com . . .

If I spent my time chained to a tree like those dirty left coast reefer smoking hippies in BC and California I wouldn't be behind the eight ball like I usually am on these things..

I don't care what you say about me.

It's when you start mocking and hating those who saved you from the Germans (twice), kept you from being conquered by the Soviets and bailed you out of "Indochina", that's what bothers me.

If we think the French have used this site to talk shit about US troops in the past, just wait until they are given Carte Blanche to do so.

Our soldiers have died to protect our very freedoms, including free speech and the right to disagree with our government, foreign policy, and even the right to disagree with the freedom of speech itself.

It is the least we can do to export this freedom to lesser nations (ie., France and the EU), even if they mock the very people who have given them this basic human right which is overwise unavailable in their country. Not doing so would simply let evil fester unnoticed.

I have to agree with shon, but i have another suggestion

I think the mods should have the Ban-A-Stinkie-A-Day event. Each day, a mod bans a random stinkie in the Top 100 for three days. So for seven day, that is a total of 21 banned days for the week.

I don't like the idea of burying threads or comments. It may turn into a popularity contest, then we'll need more oversight and on and on and on. The present way works fine. Don't read people you know are assholes. There has to be some maturity involved when making a decision to read or not to read. However falsely labeled threads should be eliminated.

Also, I feel that English should be the only language on the site. Unless I misunderstand, this is American based and why should we allow other languages. A minature version of multi-culturism? Too exclusive, not inclusive and leaves no room or discussion. Too many languages are not conducive for either discussion or bashing.

Great place and thanks.

I am all for the less rules the better. Most know my angry dispositions about mocking dead soldiers, I hope that when someone does do that dispicable act their fellow countrymen here hammer them hard and a modicum of civility is maintained on this particular matter.

That being said and me not being a message board afficiendo, can some one tell me what exactly is burying a thread and how would that happen?

That´s very straightforward.

We shove that Hot Dog thread right up Old Lyme's arse, lock him in a wooden box, and leave him under six feet of earth.

Celebrating the deaths of American troops is not free or protected speech.

My biggest concern is this site being turned into circlejerkovertroopdeaths.com from about 9AM to 3PM Eastern Time.

I'm dying to know exactly what is the definition of "tasteless" is on FF.com since I have seen just about every conceivable orifice on this site that would make one, as a previous member put it, want to wash your eyes out with acid.

And while I will never take away from the sacrifices of our troops for our freedoms, it is just that - freedoms which were earned to be enjoyed by EVERYONE. Sadly, that means putting up with idiots and morons alike to express in any forum, including FF, whatever their little itty bitty minds can generate from that modicum of fecal matter they categorize as a brain. Once again, Kooky, you have stated what is an extremist position -we are not children on FF whose fragile and vulnerable minds theoretically could be manipulated/coerced into believing something that simply isn't true.

I don't believe in censorship and applaud the change.
