First French superhero takes on Hollywood (karma: 4)  en>fr fr>en

He may look like Batman in an oversized latex suit, but David Tomaszewski, 23, hopes that his Gallic superhero, named after the chic Parisian square which houses the Ritz, will take France and the world by storm. "I thought: why can’t we too have a superhero, a French one in our cinemas?" Mr Tomaszewski told the Telegraph. No, this is not the Onion. Let the fun begin.

By Henry Samuel in Paris
Last Updated: 2:49AM BST 10/05/2008

What started out as a low-budget short film shot with friends over four days in Paris will next year be turned into a feature-length movie with a French producer.

I want to do something really French not too inspired by Marvel comics," he said.

Although he declined to go into details about the plot or his superhero’s special powers, he said the feature would be loosely based on his original short film, which has been viewed online at least 200,000 times.

In it, Vendome appears as a Parisian cross between Batman and Spiderman, albeit with a rather baggy black costume and a strange latex quiff.

He takes on Quasimodo and some angry gargoyles atop the bell tower of Notre Dame and saves Esmeralda.

The director said he chose the name Vendome because it was very "Parisian" sounding, has "elegance and mystery," and rhymes with many Marvel comics characters like Venom, or Fantom.

Mr Tomaszewski, who learned English by watching countless subtitled films in their original language, had already been picked out by Star Wars director George Lucas for his talents.

Mr Lucas twice awarded him the Young Jedi award aged 17 and 19 for his home-made films inspired by the legendary sci-fi franchise.

Mr Tomaszewski said he had not seen internet viewers’ comments saying "love the clip, shame about the costume."

"We did what we could given the small budget. It was a cheap suit, but now we’re putting a lot of money into improving it," he said.

Besides, he added: "the rubbery quality has a certain charm."

You cannot make this shit up.

Yep, he's a frenchman alright... His superhero motto is probably "nowhere to be found when danger is around"...

This is strange, to say the least. The same thing happened yesterday on TF's thread, and I suspected some kind of filter. But this time I found the video and watched it on youtube.fr.

Just search on it with vendome as keyword. This is available.

JLS, any clue about that ? Looks that only French members are concerned, even with the video we post. :?

WAIT! I've got it! They should name him jean muhamed akbar jihad... give him the super powers of igniting parked cars, destroying the facades of public buildings with a single rock, and causing general fear and panic amongst the public...

His trusty sidekick should be an organ grinding monkey who's secret weapons are a white flag, a bottle of wine. and a cheese wheel

The French should stick to movies they know best: tiring twisted love stories. I cannot think of one good action movie ever made in France by a french staff. Just watched Let's video and it's just laughable.

Justement, c'est une parodie de Matrix, tournée à la manière d'une pub. Faut pas tout prendre au premier degré, Breizh.

Shit Surfer.... faster than the Flash, leaves a long skidmark of shit before disappearing in the face of danger, and is a mortal enemy of Mr Clean and Doctor Soap.

His secret hideout is full of cheese, and to communicate he uses the only computer in the world that has a Filthium Inside (R).

He is impervious to kryptonite, but rain weakens his powers :D
