The United States was the first country to concertedly undertake compulsory sterilization programs for the purpose of eugenics. The heads of the program were avid believers in eugenics and frequently argued for their program. They were devastated when it was shut down due to ethical problems. The principal targets of the American program were the mentally retarded and the mentally ill, but also targeted under many state laws were the deaf, the blind, people with epilepsy, and the physically deformed. Native Americans, as well as Afro-American women,[1] were sterilized against their will in many states, often without their knowledge, while they were in a hospital for other reasons (e.g. childbirth). Some sterilizations also took place in prisons and other penal institutions, targeting criminality, but they were in the relative minority. In the end, over 65,000 individuals were sterilized in 33 states under state compulsory sterilization programs in the United States.[2]
Advocacy in favor of sterilization was one of Harry Laughlin’s first major projects at the Eugenics Record Office. In 1914, he published a Model Eugenical Sterilization Law that proposed to authorize sterilization of the "socially inadequate" – people supported in institutions or "maintained wholly or in part by public expense.The law encompassed the "feebleminded, insane, criminalistic, epileptic, inebriate, diseased, blind, deaf; deformed; and dependent" – including "orphans, ne'er-do-wells, tramps, the homeless and paupers." By the time the Model Law was published in 1914, twelve states had enacted sterilization laws.
By 1924, approximately 3,000 people had been involuntarily sterilized in America; the vast majority (2,500) in California. That year Virginia passed a Eugenical Sterilization Act based on Laughlin’s Model Law. It was adopted as part of a cost-saving strategy to relieve the tax burden in a state where public facilities for the "insane" and "feebleminded" had experienced rapid growth. The law was also written to protect physicians who performed sterilizing operations from malpractice lawsuits. Virginia’s law asserted that "heredity plays an important part in the transmission of insanity, idiocy, imbecility, epilepsy and crime…" It focused on "defective persons" whose reproduction represented "a menace to society."
[.....]nevertheless, Buck v. Bell supplied a precedent for the eventual sterilization of approximately 8,300 Virginians. Borrowing from Laughlin’s Model Law, the German Nazi government adopted a law in 1933 that provided the legal basis for sterilizing more than 350,000 people. Laughlin proudly published a translation of the German Law for the Prevention of Defective Progeny in The Eugenical News. In 1936, Laughlin was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Heidelberg as a tribute for his work in "the science of racial cleansing."
The Lynchburg Story
A shocking revelation that eugenics was actually practiced in the United States in the 1930s and 40s. Leading medical practitioners, backed by the rich and legal luminaries (including the revered Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes), practiced forced sterilizations on "feeble-minded persons." Their objective was to "purify the white race." And who were the feeble-minded? In their practice if not in their definition they were the "poor white trash." Women who had children out of wedlock were adjudged as "moral imbeciles" and locked up in institutions where they were sterilized. Hitler was inspired by the efforts of the American eugenicists and used their questionable hypotheses to purify the putative Aryan race first through sterilization but later with mass slaughter of those whose lives were deemed "unworthy of living." The American eugenicists in turn presented Hitler with a letter of commendation for his efforts in promoting the practice of "social hygiene." Clips of B&W movies critical of the practice were used in the movie. Somebody ought to help me identify them. In any case, I remember Laura Dern starring in a color movie on the same subject. She portrayed one of the victims of the gruesome social experiment. The state with the most number of forced sterilizations is Virginia with its huge mental institution at Lynchburg which housed thousands of inmates.

Issues they have identified are forced sterilization, unsafe use of Depo-Provera and Norplant, and destructive alcohol-related policies"
"A study by the Government Accounting Office during the 1970s found widespread sterilization abuse in four areas served by the IHS. In 1975 alone, some 25,000 Native American women were permanently sterilized--many after being coerced, misinformed, or threatened. One former IHS nurse reported the use of tubal ligation on "uncooperative" or "alcoholic" women into the 1990s."

Although in esscence I would agree with some aspect of eugenics, I think humans would become lazy if they didn't have cures to find.
I would however, never trust a government that would put such a course of action into place (e.g. USA & 3rd Reich).
Perhaps this is why embryology is being developed (bypassing the need).
I think euphanasia will become a greatly contested argument as millions of Altzheimers sufferers become a financial burden to countries economic systems in twenty years or so. Just like the deaf, dumb and blind are currently.
