They KNOW that the nation sending only 3 athletes or one team per event is at a HUGE disadvantage against the union sending 27 times that many athletes! The selection process is made so the best athletes can compete, along with others who just go for the fun of it.
A single EU team would just limit the number of athletes who go for the fun of it, not the number of those who have a real chance of medal.

That much I know, at least casinos have whores and are more entertaining than the olympics.

None of the individual sports have any real fans, except for boxing, and ( to some extent ) chess.

All the sports that attract fans are the team sports, such as soccer, baseball and basketball.

The olympics are mostly a big fucking waste of television time that could otherwise be productively spent transmitting re-runs of the simpsons, or south park.
