A shooting war right before the November elections would possibly scare the voters into wanting the tougher political party (Republicans) instead of their mommy (the Democratic Party) to lead them.

With a war going on hopefully voters would prefer to have a highly decorated combat veteran as commander and chief (John McCain) instead of someone who never stepped foot on a military base until after he became a US Senator only two years ago (Barack Hussein Obama).
