German snub for McCain as Merkel praises 'well-equipped' rival

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has praised Barack Obama's political and physical strength as "Obamania" reached the highest levels of state on the eve of the Democratic presidential contender's feverishly anticipated visit to Berlin today.

In a remark that could be interpreted as casting aspersions on his 71-year-old Republican rival John McCain, Ms Merkel told reporters: "I would say that he is well-equipped – physically, mentally and politically."

Mr Obama, who is the favourite US presidential candidate of Germans by a wide margin according to opinion polls, has chosen Berlin as the setting for the centrepiece of his foreign tour. After talks with Ms Merkel in the morning, he will deliver a speech on transatlantic relations, in which he is expected to reach out to Europeans to repair the damage wrought by the Bush administration since the Iraq war.

The speech, at the Victory Column in Tiergarten park in the heart of the city, is expected to attract tens of thousands of people as curious Germans flock to see the man who has been described in Germany as the "black JFK". John F Kennedy was the Democratic president who delivered his impassioned "Ich bin ein Berliner speech" in 1963.

The Obama trip has proved diplomatically tricky for the German government because of his status as candidate, not president. Ms Merkel vetoed initial plans to hold the speech at the Brandenburg Gate, where Ronald Reagan urged the Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down" the Berlin Wall. Mr Obama will instead stand at the Victory Column, a monument completed in 1873 to celebrate Prussian war victories.

Anticipating that she would discuss Afghanistan when Berlin is under pressure from the Bush administration to send in more German troops, Ms Merkel stressed to reporters: "I will make it clear that Germany is not shirking deeper involvement but also make very clear our limits in the same way as I do with the current president."

Ms Merkel said she would not be in Berlin for Mr Obama's speech, but added: "Maybe I'll turn on the television."

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old German was arrested at the Victory Column after driving his car through a security barricade and attempting to pour red paint around the 226ft column.

What a brainless twat

try not to typecaste yourself too much ya nazi bitch.

The euros are going to turn Americans off Obama.

Why should we care about a country that started 2 world wars and had their Obamamania called called hitler mania. Hell they have a lot in common. Media propaganda that is.

I would say that he is well-equipped – physically

And we think our leaders embarrass the hell out of us. You couldn't make this shit up.

I guess he's upholding Democrat traditions. I must say, Clinton's skanks were at least younger. Kennedy's were younger and better looking.

Altes, don't you Nazi pukes service your own women anymore?

The reason the Euros like Obama is A. Because he will fuck America up, no Euro likes to see a strong America that tells them to fuck off like Bush has done and B. they are socialist shit for brains

They loved Hitler too!!!

Well, she does have a huge rack, a bit oooold and saggy, but still about as large as Hitler's Zeppelin.

HAHAHAHAHAH!

Ich bin ein Berliner

To this day, Germans laugh about the American President that went to Berlin and proclaimed to the world, "I am a donut!"

"to repair the damage wrought by the Bush administration since the Iraq war."

Too funny.

Got to remember to thank the germans for giving me yet another reason NOT to vote for obomba.

If they love him so fucking much, I suggest they vote for him.

There is at least ONE good thing that would come from Hussein winning. He would have to publicly ask the yurps to get off their lazy, cowardly asses, keep their promises and send troops to Afghanistan.....troops who would actually do some real fighting. They would hem and haw and the troops would-OF FUCKING COURSE-never materialize. We could then beat the libtards over the head with it and point out how their entire worldview is totally fucked and they are incompetent and incapable of handling foreign policy. There really isn't much they could say in return since they are counting on the yurps to deliver and we all know that will never happen.

Merkel to tell Obama Germany has Afghanistan limits

BERLIN, July 23 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday she would make clear to U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama that there were limits to Germany's military engagement in Afghanistan.

Germany has been under pressure from NATO partners, and the United States in particular, to increase its troop numbers in Afghanistan and move soldiers from the north to the more dangerous south to help fight Taliban insurgents.

"I will make it clear that Germany is not shirking deeper involvement but also make very clear our limits in the same way as I do with the current president," Merkel said ahead of a meeting with Obama in Berlin on Thursday.

"I will also tell Mr. Obama that there must be a balance between military engagement and the political expectations of the Afghan government," she told a news conference.

Under a parliamentary mandate, Germany can send a maximum of 3,500 troops to Afghanistan. That mandate expires in October and Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung has said Berlin plans to increase the number of troops it can send by 1,000 later this year.

During a trip to Afghanistan, Obama called the situation in the country "precarious and urgent" on Sunday and said Washington should start planning to transfer more troops there from Iraq.

Obama is expected in Berlin on Thursday and Merkel said she would also address issues including climate change, trade and NATO with the presidential candidate.

The word from Germany is go fuck yourself America and vote Obama.

I used to think Merkel was a pretty good leader....Wrong! I also thought that France finally had a leader worth something (Sarko)....Wrong Again! Almost all of the Eurotard leaders have sold their souls to the Brussel Bonzos. Fuck the Euro leaders and what they think! Stay the fuck out of Americas business, asswipes!

Germans like Obama for very shallow reasons, so I wouldn't attach much importance to that. They like the look of a young and thoughtful guy rather than an old codger like McCain, who frankly has passed his sell-by date. If Americans think that's such a big deal, that's their look-out.

But why should Germany or any other country change its policies just because you have a new guy in power? Nothing much will radically change unless McCain or Obama radically change current US policies - which I doubt.

Obama= Hitler

Well equiped?
Shamefull useless german whore!
I understand that german cowards prefer a weak US and appeasement

Halt Dein dreckiges Maul, Du lächerliche Arschgeige.

Didn't end them, either.

If I had any "K" left I'd give you one, Wulfrun, for making me laugh today. Hit you tomorrow. Thanks!

Die Deutcshen koennen Obamas Shwanz lutschen wie sie wollen. Sie werden aber ihn nicht wählen denn das ist US Sachen.
Es ist dumm von ihm seinen Wahlkampf in Europa zu treiben.
I understand Obama has to bring some stuff to his foreign relations credentials, but touring Europe as a candidate (he surely will pretend as a senator) amounts to campaigning in the wrong places. How many votes does he hope to get from the yurps? NIL. But at least this brings him some good feeling.
This once again demonstrates his apathy of the US.

Exactly! Yet.....this is precisely the opposite of what the Jackasses have been claiming.

"Germany didn't start the two world wars"

What am I missing about the second one? And who did, then?

Well, to be politically correct let's say... the evildoers, whatever that means. This way you don't "hurt the feelings/sensivities" of some in EU.
