The Unitedstatians of Yankeestan

Here's a link to a ranking by medals total:

sports.yahoo.com . . .

China is now 3 medals away from the US.

China, leader in Gold medals, is now 2 medals away from the US in terms of medals total. Britain #4, France still #6 in that ranking.

China and the US now have a total of 79 medals each.

The US is now 3 medals ahead of China again...

Damn, I wish we could extend the event closes a bit...this might actually be close!

That ranking is meaningless.

Gold/silver and bronze should be balanced by attributing a different weight.

3 for gold
2 for silver
1 for bronze

Results with data as of today:

US: ...29*3 + 34*2 + 32*1 = 187
China: 46*3 + 15*2 + 22*1 = 190

China wins.

We'll do it both ways for the intellectually curious, when it's all over.

I still think we'll take China in the end.

In spite of rampant cheating throughout the games by China, the USA has finally broken away in the medal count today.

www.timesonline.co.uk . . .

We're going to have the highest medal count, and China will have the most golds. That was predicted even before this started. Hopefully we'll win enough extra medals to beat them on a 3-2-1 system too.

The Froggies are down to seventh in the total count and only have four golds. Australia, with a third of Froggieland's population, has eight more total medals and seven more golds. I think per capita, they kick every major nation's ass.

The US is now 16 medals away from China.
France back to #6.

3 days of competition to go.

I think per capita, they kick every major nation's ass.

No, Jamaica does.

That ranking is meaningless.

There's no official ranking.
EVERY ranking is equally meaningless, or meaningful.

The US will prefer a ranking by medal total.
China will prefer the ranking by Gold first.
Australia and Jamaica will prefer a ranking per capita.
Only the EU tops them all!

Gold/silver and bronze should be balanced by attributing a different weight.

3 for gold
2 for silver
1 for bronze

Above is the table of this type of ranking to date.

The US has now a 13 medals lead on China.

France now has 34 medals, one more than in Athens (33 medals with 11 Gold)
At least 3 more to come in Boxing and Handball, Gold or Silver.

Games closing ceremony is in 2 days.

If you take away the judged events and the cheaters, the count would be very different.

Atlantic,

I'm sorry to say that your ranking with EU sucks. EU is not a country, not a federation, EU is politically nothing.

:D

Don't read too much into it. This EU medals stuff is just Atlantic's usual dick-measuring disorder.

It's an obsessive compulsive condition. He can't help himself.

I'm sorry to say that I disagree. :)

Can I also tell you how entertaining I think it is to see the bashers alternatively calling the EU the new Soviet Union or Nazi Germany and then saying it doesn't exist?

For those interested in alternative methods of ranking, including the one chosen in this very prediction thread:

Five alternative Olympics medals tables

The official Olympics medals table is based on the number of gold medals and it puts China top and Great Britain third. But what happens if other factors are taken into account?

Much has been made of the Great Britain team's lofty position in third place in the official Olympics medals table.

That is based on the number of gold medals, with the number of silver and bronze medals only counting when two countries have the same number of golds. We have won one gold medal in the last 48 hours and our six-gold advantage has almost disappeared entirely

This system counts against countries like France which, as of 1000 BST on Friday morning, had enjoyed 32 podium finishes but only a handful of wins.

Maybe with this in mind, and half an eye on China, media in the US have been publishing a table of total medals won, regardless of colour, and that puts the US top.

Here are five alternative ways to interpret how countries rank, taking into account gold, silver and bronze, population size, gross domestic product and size of the Olympic team. The medal tallies were counted at 1000 BST on Friday.

news.bbc.co.uk . . .

Medal ranking hardly makes any sense at all no matter how you count them seeing as it takes a whole team two weeks of competition to get one medal in a team sport yet in other sports medals are handed out like candies (swimming most notably, 21 competitors won 3 medals or more in the swimming pool (some of which are "shared" by relay teams, granted)).

At least 3 more to come in Boxing and Handball, Gold or Silver.

Hope you're not talking about the French boxer who just got his ass beat in the first found.

Dude got hammered! :D

The only french boxer competing today got a silver medal.

results.beijing2008.cn . . .

A few hours before closing ceremony, the US has a 10 medals lead on China.
France now has 39 medals, 1 more to come in Handball, Gold or Silver. That will be 7 more than in Athens, 2 more than in Sydney, 3 more than in Atlanta, 11 more than in Barcelona.

Right you are. And he must have had some good fights to get where he was, but that medal has got to be bittersweet because he got his ass whooped soundly in the first round.
