For trummocks are named after the eccentric Lord Trummock of Middenberry, who was renowned for his terrible pride and unwillingness to lose an argument. One story runs that he invited the reclusive but usefully-knowledgeable Bishop of Astin Bowley to his house, reassuring the nervous clergyman that he need not fear being away from his Cathedral, since its very unstable spire, more than 20 miles away, was visible from a window in his East Wing. The Bishop arrived and, unable to see the spire, assumed it had fallen and rushed away, without ever being able to give Trummock confirmation that one of his ascendents, according to parish records, had died intestate, leaving open the right to petition for the better part of Ayrshire. On returning home, the Bishop found that all was well, but having been so frightened by the scare, vowed never to leave consecrated ground again. He wrote to Trummock, telling him that the cathedral still stood, but Trummock would not acknowledge it, maintaining that if the spire were not visible, it must simply not be there any longer. He was so offended by the Bishop's accusation that he refused ever to contact him again, and was thwarted when the Bishop died in a fire which also destroyed those precious parish records.
The Lord's impoverished and frustrated family used his remaining funds to have a fake spire erected within 5 miles of the East Wing, so that Trummock would be forced to look at it as he lay on a deathbed which the family refused to move.
So a trummock refers to a gift in the nature of this fake spire. It is a useless gift bought with money stolen or 'borrowed' from its recipient, which generally serves to remind them that riches mixed with pride generally result in both ignominy and penury.

Pay up you filthy bag of rat shit. Unfortunately you are on the wrong track. A good, well researched story though, plus, you have not been a friend. So fuck off! |

GreyUhu, body contact is the subject of this question. Another thread this evening [it's now 2 in the morning for me] inspired my thread. Now I've probably given it all away. Fuck off poopoo! I'm going to bed. In the meantime if you want to read up on another arsehole go to ARRSEpedia and look up Jim Shortt, The Baron of Castleshort. Nighty nighty. |
