He wrote to Trummock, telling him that the cathedral still stood, but Trummock would not acknowledge it, maintaining that if the spire were not visible, it must simply not be there any longer. He was so offended by the Bishop's accusation that he refused ever to contact him again, and was thwarted when the Bishop died in a fire which also destroyed those precious parish records.

The Lord's impoverished and frustrated family used his remaining funds to have a fake spire erected within 5 miles of the East Wing, so that Trummock would be forced to look at it as he lay on a deathbed which the family refused to move.

So a trummock refers to a gift in the nature of this fake spire. It is a useless gift bought with money stolen or 'borrowed' from its recipient, which generally serves to remind them that riches mixed with pride generally result in both ignominy and penury.
