Alright, I know that this isn't a gaming forum, and most of you have little to no interest in online games. But I've noticed a few members make reference to games that have been released over the past year or so. So I thought I would make the offer for anyone who might be interested.
If you've spent any amount of time online you've probably heard of World of Warcraft, even if MMORPG's (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) aren't your forte. It's a game set in a fantasy world where you select a faction, race and class and go to work killing your typical AD&D-esque fantasy creatures such as gnomes, demons, demonically-possessed gnomes, and gnome-possessed demons. This site contains some good info on what the game contains, while this write-up has some practical information for beginners.
World of Warcraft has a recruitment program going where if you recruit someone the two of you get several benefits. These include triple experience for both the recruiter and the recruitee while they are near each other and the ability to summon one another at will. In addition, the recruitee gets a 10-day free trial, while the recruiter gets a Spike Cohen-approved mount, as featured in the supplied picture.
Stinkies need not apply. The point of this game is to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women. Not to run around like a dickless idiot, fellating enemies and yelping at members of your own faction that they don't pay your useless ass enough heed. And I'm certainly not aware of any class that has a mixture of skills such as 'Strongly Worded Letter' or 'Worship Tyrannical Ruler and the Ground He Walks Upon'. I suppose that you could always emulate the actions of this video, and your repeated rapings of Africa could be equated to twinking. But regardless, I still don't want you by my side even in a virtual world, as the smell of unwashed French ass is probably powerful enough to emanate from your toon. And besides, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the game, what with you whining every time I kill a mob that I ignored all diplomatic channels and that I should have let the UN handle the giant half-rat/half-man that was charging towards me, swearing I'd never take his candle. And the sheer hypocrisy of knowing that after I log and I'm not looking you'll go on to slaughter thousands of defenseless little critters like a bunch of unarmed African protesters would irritate me.
It'd probably get to the point where I made another toon on the opposite faction just so that I could kill you. But that would get boring since I'm sure whenever you seen me you'd take off all your virtual clothes and have your toon bend over, just like your grandpappy did in WW2. Heck, it's bad enough that my server has a minority of Quebecers, which I've come to realize is the Canadian term for Down's Syndrome, without adding more French to the game. Plus, I highly doubt you'd enjoy the game anyway. MMORPG's are the ultimate form of capitalism. There's no taxes to pay and no hand-outs to be given. And no one is going to care if you go on strike from playing the game just because someone else has tens of thousands of gold while you're busy rubbing two coppers together hoping to make a third.
But otherwise, any non-French English-speaking peeps from FF are welcome to join me. I can hook you up with gold and bags to get you started. I play on the Alliance faction on the server Lothar. If you're interested PM me your email address and I'll send an invite your way. Or if you have any question feel free to PM me or reply to this thread. 32 Replies to Is anyone interested in trying World of Warcraft? | re: Is anyone interested in trying World of Warcraft? A bunch of guys at work have been playing for years, including owners of the company.
It is very weird to hear these guys talking. Sales pukes, tech weenies, accounting dorks, company officers...all gathered in a conf room at lunch, laptops tuned into WOW, yelling about really geeky stuff.
I find it disturbing. They have been trying for years to get me to join. Sometimes I feel like the only adult in the company. | re: Is anyone interested in trying World of Warcraft? (karma: 2)

There is a suggestion that should be addressed to French company Vivendi that owns Blizzard. Maybe a "strongly worded letter" will do the trick.

Often due to my work schedule, I found myself playing with Europeans during their "primetime". As I played on the Axis side, my co-players tended to be Germans, Finns, Italians and Spaniards. ALL of them knew English enough to get by.
My "Clan" was originally known as 1st Panzer Leibstandarte (The SS being deleted due to European PC laws) then pressured to become just LAH. Then to The Iron Brotherhood. I think its defunct now. The core of the clan were Canadian army soldiers. Good guys. | re: Is anyone interested in trying World of Warcraft? (karma: 1)

It's a slippery slope, video games. I spent at least a third of my teenage years, cracked out on Williams' Defender/Stargate and smoking cigs with all the other misanthropes at the arcade.

When I used to play, there was french guild on my east coast US based server. That was when I was in college, so maybe things have changed. I heard the germans have a real hard-on for that game. Awthum....warcrack.
Can't knock the warcraft guys too much. I spent thousands of hours playing Unreal Tournament 2004.

You can play either side in that game, at any time. When I played, it was strictly 1940 France---none of that high end equipment (Shermans, Tigers, etc.) The Axis win ratio was like 56:1, back then.
My Clan even "cheated" once by staging an Operation Sea Lion. The game designers had placed some air bases in Britain for the RAF, never thinking Germans would ever go there. A couple of our more "devoted" members took a small patrol boat on the coast, loaded it with some infantry, and proceeded to spend over four hours in real time, crossing the Channel. Once they took over a spawn point, the invasion was on!

MMORPG's are pretty lame imo.
I prefer games where ones power is based on skill rather than the amount of time invested.
RTS and FPS are really where it's at.
Try Dawn of War II for instance.

World War II Online: Battleground Europe
I remember that game. It came out at a time when I wasn't interested in playing MMO's, but if I recall correctly Old Man Murray had a few write-ups about it. I'm surprised that the German players played the Axis. I would've figured the deeply embedded cultural shame of WW2 that Germans suffer from would have made them play as Allies.

Yeah, a friend of mine went through a similar experience. At his previous job all anyone did was play Warcraft all day. He said they didn't do any real work. He played too, but I don't know if it was because he was interested in it, or just because he didn't want to be left alone to pick up the slack of everyone else. He stopped playing once he started working at a different company.

It wouldn't work, I'm neither German nor Arab.

No shit. You're not telling us anything we don't already know. I didn't say that Frenchies didn't have access to the game. Just that I didn't want them at my virtual side. Incidentally is the number in your name a reference to your IQ? That'd explain a lot.

Actually WoW is an exception to that rule. Those who purchase copies of the European version of WoW have to play on EU servers. There's no "French-only" server that they can gibber-jabber their dying language on.

Yeah, my server is East coast as well, and has a plethora of Quebecers, Europeans and strangely enough Australians. I would think that Aussies would play on a Pacific server but I guess there's always

Yeah, exactly. In fact I'm not aware of any games that are popular world wide that were made by the French. For that matter there's only a few game developers in Europe that produce anything that's popular outside of their continent.

I played to death the original Unreal Tournament. Wasn't a big fan of any of the follow-ups, though. And yeah, I know how you feel regarding playing online. Once FPS games became popular on consoles it was all over for us older players.

Is this one of those TV episodes where everything is backwards? Yanks are cowards, Stinkies are brave, etc?

That actually sounds really fun. Now I regret not trying the game.

I played that briefly as well. I remember making a corporation just for kicks that was named The Sieg Heilers, with the corporate ticker name HITLR. Makes me laugh every time I think about it, though the corp was disbanded by the sysops within a day. The thing I liked about that game was that it was one server for all the players. WoW really amputates the community by splitting up so much of its playerbase among hundreds of different servers. Though I understand the need for such a thing when you have 11 million players.

I actually don't disagree with this sentiment. But I also like being able to log in and build your toon up a little bit at a time, and not have the result of that effort disappear as soon as you log. I have played Dawn of War 2, and didn't enjoy it as much as the first one. I thought the single player campaign was fun though, with the RPG leveling system and gear drops.
Anyway, thanks for the replies all. KotR to all but the most worthless of Stinks. | re: Is anyone interested in trying World of Warcraft? (karma: 1)
