Palin resigning as Alaska governor
Jul 3 03:54 PM US/Eastern
Late Friday Surprise: Palin Set to Resign Governorship & Will Not Seek Second Term

WASILLA, Alaska (AP) - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she will resign from office July 26.

Her spokesman wouldn't say why Palin decided to step down, but the announcement stirred speculation that she would focus on a bid for the 2012 Republican nomination for president.

Spokesman Dave Murrow says Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the governor's picnic in Fairbanks at the end of the month.

If she wants to be a Senator or run in '12....how does resigning help her do that?

Theories? A little early to prep for a presidential run.

Think there's a scandal about to emerge? 14 year old about to announce she's pregnant?

how does resigning help her do that?

The news reports are mentioning that she wanted more time to work on national issues of importance to all Americans. If she goes to Washington and lobbies for research spending for "Special Needs" children, it'll be difficult for even the most rabid democrat to attack her.

I mean, what politician wants a campaign commercial showing him or her attacking Palin for wanting to cure mentally retarded children?

Nobody in Anchorage had any idea this was coming....in her speech she said they had to fly Todd in to be there for her address. I think she wants to run full time for either the Senate or the Presidency....in which case she has made a mistake I doubt she will be able to recover from.

Divorce? I can not imagine how difficult this media must be on their family. Maybe a skeleton? Everyone has got them, but the MSM would shout them from the rooftops to destroy her.

Very few of them would even pause before attacking her. She could be donating blood while giving CPR to a disabled child and the donks (and vile partners in crime, the MSM) would be spitting on her and beating her with clubs.

Irrational hatred of this woman has passed even BDS as a cause of strokes among the left.

Very odd, especially since apparently her term is up in 2010. It's not like she was going to have to resign anyway.

Her and Todd are very tight...I don't think that had anything to do with it. Either there is some issue that is hanging over her head...and I doubt it considering how many private detectives the DNC and Larry Flynt sent to Wasilla and Anchorage...or she thinks this is going to allow her to run full time for a Federal office.

If so, I think that's a major blunder. A lot of her charm and appeal comes from being an Alaskan, being able to show that she runs a state that works, and not being part of the chattering classes and Washington mess here in the Lower 48.

She is a great person and I wish her the best. If things work out she could really go places.

If she went around the country and gave rally's in stadiums she could attract 30,000 people or so in lots of cities. Even in Honolulu 10,000 might show up. the reps don't have anybody else.

Silly move if you ask me. Like everyone else here the experience of being a governor is a nice bullet on a resume for higher office.

If I am not mistaken her term is up in 2010? And if so she would have plenty of time to "study" on the pertinent issues.

I do agree with her that having her family dragged through the dredges of the media probably have taken a toll on her and the family. I think this, to a point, will play in her favor if she runs for higher office highlighting the hypocrisy of the media. It won't stop them from continually trying to trash her but I think it could play in her, and most importantly, the Republicans favor. The Repubs just have to find someone to play this in their favor.

Who knows, I think it was a stupid move.

Call it a sacrifice for restoring the America that existed from 1776 until 1961.

I think all of you are on the right track (with the exception of the scandal comments)but consider this and think of the calendar while you are doing so.

"Resigning now hurts her chances" is pure media spin and is being spat out right now even by FOX news radio of all outlets no less.

1. She runs for re-election as governor and wins.
2. Then, if she wants to run for president starting in 2010, after having won, she then has to abandon the people who re-elected her to run for president? Not a good idea, only a selfish, self centered arrogant fuck would run for an office he does not intend to serve in so he could collect a check and run for another office. (That is not Sarah Palin and you would think less of her if she did do something like that)
3. She resigns effective the end of the month, Parnell has an easy transition, has time to understand the office, the voters are well served, the voters have time to understand him, there is continuity of her ideas and Parnell runs in 2010 and wins. This is more responsible and important than you think it is.
4. Remember that Reagan's term as Governor of California ended in 1975, which gave him too little to realy introduce himself to the nations voters in time for the 76 convention.
5. Palin has a tremendous level of attraction amongst mothers, shitkickers, gearjammers, rednecks, gun owners, pickup truck drivers, coal miners, NON-UNION factory workers, construction workers, pro-lifers, hunters, sportsfishermen, NASCAR types, now what she has to do is literally go back to school and learn econ and foriegn history.

I think this makes good sense. It frees her up from the restraints of "public protocol" in speaking out and it helps to remove her family from most of the BS that has occurred. She could rightly argue that her plans made it impossible to serve her constituents properly and it was the only right thing to do, rather than hold on at all costs...like that Sanford prick.

Quite frankly I think it could be a gutsy and shrewd move.

Compared to the vast majority of stupid, gutless, greedy bastards in office I give her a chance to convince me to vote for her.

Wow..all of the doom a gloom and people foretelling scandals
and dirt digging..

The woman is just tired of wasting time and money proving she as good as I know she is.(time and Money from her beloved State)

for those that think this is the last time we will see that beautiful soul, that is Sarah Palin..all I can say is...
if you play poker..or what ever gambling endeavor you engage in..
you must not do well at it.

I'd say the Stage is set for 2012..so guess, wish or just twist in the wind..your choice..

I listened to her speech..and I saw nothing but class..and what ever she might choose..God bless..God speed..

She's resigning a year early for the term. Just like that. 2012 is three years away. Does she really need three years of full time prep to run for President? If she can't take the heat of the media, she's has no business running for President.

Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and Louisianna Governor Bobby Jindal will be strong contenders I think.
