De l’alcool, sinon rien ! C’est le genre de couac diplomatique qui survient une fois ou deux tous les dix ans.

La dernière, c’est lorsque le Premier ministre irakien, Nouri al-Maliki, est venu en visite officielle en France, début mai. Un déjeuner était prévu à l’Elysée. Mais lorsque Nouri al-Maliki a constaté que du vin allait être servi, le chef du cabinet irakien a exigé que « l’alcool impie » soit retiré de la table. Pas question, lui ont répondu les Français. Chiite observant, Maliki n’a pas voulu céder. Résultat : le déjeuner a été tout simplement annulé.

« Nous avons commis une erreur, reconnaît un diplomate irakien. On aurait dû signaler ce détail au protocole, avant le repas ». L’impair n’a toutefois pas plombé la suite de la visite de Maliki. « Sa rencontre dans l’après-midi avec Nicolas Sarkozy s’est très bien passé », relève un témoin.

A la fin des années 90, déjà, pareil incident eut lieu lors de la visite en France du président iranien de l’époque, le réformateur Mohammad Khatami. De byzantines négociations avaient même été entamées sur le point de savoir si on ne pouvait pas cacher le vin dans des armoires, pour ne pas indisposer les hôtes iraniens. Actually, this word entered into the English language in about 1879. Etymology: Spanish - intransigente, from the Latin transigere.

This incident probably pissed the french off. Their usual way of doing business is to get people pissed at the table and then get them to agree to things. Without the wine nobody believes their bullshit.

There's a huge difference between serving pork to a muslim or a jew and having a bottle of wine on the table. Nobody was forcing the Iraqi delegation to drink.
