Ubuntu is the easiest install of any operating system I've seen in my life. It is the finalized version of Linux for Complete idiots. The darn thing is pretty good at detecting all the hardware, and making everything "just work" like the Mac cult people like to say about their macs.

Yeah, I'll explain. Let me preface it by saying I make most of my living in the MS world, some Linux and yes, even Novell.

The biggest problem you computer nerds have is that you think a person's computer should be the center of their world. Well, it's not. To most people it is just a tool. Not much different from a hammer or a truck. It does a job, end of story. I know a lot of very smart, professional people who are better served by their Macs. They want to email, word process and surf. No viruses, no muss, no fuss.

I never argue PC or Mac. I just have fun watching others do it. I have been working with software for over 20 years. When I first started, I had absolutely no money at all as a student to buy a computer. And the first operating system my fingers ever touched was Unix installed on a mainframe at the university. It was a while until I finally got a part time job that paid enough that I could go out and buy my first computer.. which was an IBM 486 with a whopping 1 meg of RAM.

Strictly speaking, the architecture of the powerPC chips was marvelous. If you asked me directly the question of what is my choice.... I would go straight to the old PowerPC architecture.

I use a Dell, and I can't complain about their service. Except that I pay extra for the on-site, next business day warranty. Worth every penny of the extra 100 dollars you pay. Whenever I have a problem, I just call Dell and the very next day, a tech comes out, takes my laptop apart, and replaces anything they need to replace.

Mac VS Pc is for people who can't decide between Star Trek and Star Wars. I just don't get involved ( unless I see the golden opportunity of fanning the flames of a small territorial war of course )

i don't use windows 3.11. It is an image i use to show that constructors want absolutely to sell us big computers whereas you don't need at all this power to surf or use "word".

You can use Mosaic. I was lucky that in my lifetime, I was present and in college when we all saw the birth of the WWW. University of Chicago at Urbana-Champaigne released to the world Mosaic, which would initially run on Unix. Then, they released it for the PC.

You also need to add to windows 3.11 a "socket" service. Which is the fundamental file that handles the web communication. The browsers expect an operating system to provide "socket" services. But Windows 3.11 lacked it. So, for Mosaic to work, you also will need to install "Winsock".

I didn't say it would run the plug ins. Flash Player belongs in a group of software called "Plug ins". And Plug Ins did not appear until Netscape was released to the world. That happened during the Windows 3.11 and eventually Windows 95 years.

Mosaic does not support Plug Ins. But I did answer what you needed to do to browse web pages on Windows 3.11

Mosaic also does not support JavaScript. Which is even more pervasive than Plug Ins.

But let me tell ya one thing for sure.... Students at the Unix Lab where I used to sit on a 25 inch graphic Unix mainframe terminal... were all running Mosaic. And it was in THAT very moment that they discovered... ONLINE PORNO!!! ROTFLMFAO... so Proud Racist and et al can rest assured that their vile desires will still be fully satisfied in the event that we need to roll back to the birth days of the world wide web

Assembling a PC out of parts you buy is so easy.. "A caveman can do it" And no, I don't work for Geico.

But the problem is that I use laptops, not Desktops. And while you can go out of your way to modify the motherboard on a laptop.... your choices are very limited because you have to be able to buy the same exact cut of motherboard as the manufacturer implanted on your laptop. You may also have to change the video cable, depending on the video chipset layout and where the socket is located on the new motherboard.

In the end, it's a lot easier to buy a case of beer and use the laptop as a clay pigeon than customize it
