World War II-era navigation system (LORAN) shut down (by the chimp if you ask..) (karma: 2)  en>fr fr>en

Washington -- Good night, Loran.

In a series of small ceremonies, the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday shut down Loran-C, a navigation and timing system that has guided mariners and aviators since World War II.

The death blow came last May when President Obama called the system obsolete, saying it is no longer needed in an age in which Global Positioning System devices are nearly ubiquitous in cars, planes and boats.

But supporters of Loran -- including the man known as "the father of GPS" -- say the nation's increasing reliance on GPS paradoxically has increased the importance of maintaining Loran as a backup.

Supporters also argue that the mere existence of Loran makes the GPS satellite system a less attractive target for cyber-thugs, terrorists or future military adversaries.

Supporters of Loran -- short for long range navigation system -- say the system is a near-perfect backup because it provides similar information to GPS, but has dissimilar infrastructure.

You are welcome to use the GALILEO Satellite Navigation System, when it is ready... in 2050 (estimated 2013 but don't hold your breath being an EU project :D)

Canada is shutting theirs off too, so will be Russia, I imagine in the future.

:)

And if you really need a backup...then uh...

This empty suit could not even run a cash register, yet he is making economic policy. He could not lead himself out of an empty bag, yet he is telling generals how to marshal the troops. His motorcades keep getting lost down the street from the white house, yet he wants to tell mariners engulfed by the vast blue how time honored reliable navigation systems are no longer useful. Navigation at sea is like land navigation in the desert. It is difficult, because there are usually no landmarks. If Barack Hussein Obama had a compass in his hands in the desert and he knew the bearing of an oasis a few miles from him, would he make it? For all the ridiculing of President Bush, he was a much more astute leader for most of his term, because he knew his lane. He also had enough sense to defer to experts and he did not show an unwarranted know-it-all attitude like Barack Hussein Obama.

As an Avid sailor, Loran was the first system I learned...well the second after dead reckoning. Watch when Obumbler says that all Chapmans have to be burned.

Problem with Obama... Putting aside all questions of intelligence, education, family, previous experience as a politician...

Obama does miss the critical knowledge that all Americans of WASP descent would have: BACKGROUND... which in turn can help to take good and bad decisions based on common sense.
With generations of your ancestors having lived in a country, you get a sort of heritage, an untold list of DOs and DONTs that Obama seems to be ignoring...

obama is a fool

If he thinks gps eliminate the usefullness if not the NEED for LORAN, then he's just a dope.

The fact is, he has no idea what the fuck either of them are. As usual, he just reading what his monkey-handlers have written for him.

Next stop: Let's turn all the VOR stations into windmills.

He is SUCH a fucking joke.

Obama was quite stupid in shutting down loran. Not only was aviation and maritime dependent on Loran C it provided a good back up. There are only 20 odds GPS satellites in space and some already showing there age. Figures HNIC doesn't know anything about having redundancy in the system.

FUCKING THANK YOU OBAMANATION! YOU ARE A FUCKING RETARDED, MUD-SLIME, ASSHOLE LICKING, BABOON FUCKING, CANT CATCH A FISH, NO GOOD MOTHER FUCKER !!!

I have THOUSANDS of LORAN "C" numbers I used to make a living on, using them to locate fish with-in a 40 by 80 foot box.

Now, I have to go and BUY a $2500 GPS unit that is accurate to a 100 by 100 foot box. The military version is accurate to with a one foot box, including elevation. Hence put in a missile into the right side front door vs, the left door. OR in my case, Stop on a number in 400 feet of water and you could Miss by as much as 100 feet. Grouper dont live on sand and dont move down current to the eat.

Good Bye LORAN C I knew you as a baby, Thank You for being able to allow me to make a living....

Its going to take me YEARS to transfer my numbers over. In the mean time the Gobment is also HAMMERING The Commercial Fishing industry with arcane draconian rule's like "What Kind of hook to use and, GET THIS..... You CANNOT USE LIVE BAIT!!! Its cruel to the BAIT fish.......

America does NOT deserve Obongo or maybe Obongo does NOT deserve America. Cannot figure which way or is it both?

I am also not sure if Obongo is just dumb or if fundamentally he is anti-American and pretends to be dumb to cover his forfaits

are there no conversion-tools?

www.google.com . . .

www.navcen.uscg.gov . . .

I have over 10,000 numbers in my books. From Off Cape Cod down and around Key West to Brownsville Texas. At a conversion rate of 1 number per minute, very conservative, it would take me, non stop without sleep, MONTHS to convert all of them to Lat/Long. Or I can drive around, Like I did when I started fishing, with there new GPS unit and look for fish....

AND I will still have to look around INSIDE that number while off shore, dragging 600 feet of 5/8's hard lay anchor line, 50 feet of 3/8inch chain and a 60 pound anchor, and then plant the anchor in a spot that will locate me on a spot that will angle the baits down 400 feet to the fish. And the current is running at 3 KTs opposite the wind @ 10 Kts.

They are putting us out of business so you can enjoy imported
B-Liners or porgies that are caught in Hugo Chaves's waters.

S C U M B A G S the lot of 'em

Fucking idiot. What is he going to do if Chinese, Russians or even Iranians who now have the capability spray some dust in the orbit? He thinks like French
