New Russian museum to mark bicentennial of Napoleon's defeat

Russia will spend nearly 60 million euros to build a new museum celebrating the 200th anniversary of Russia's 1812 victory over French emperor Napoleon, vice premier Alexander Joukov said Wednesday.

"I hope that it will be a collection ... at the level of the best museums in the world," Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.

Some 2.38 billion rubles (59 million euros, 81 million dollars) were to be spent on the museum by 2012.

Joukov said that the museum would include exhibits of many items from the era that are currently stocked in the warehouses of the History Museum on Moscow's Red Square.

Napoleon invaded Russia in June 1812 and although his forces entered Moscow in September Tsar Alexander I did not surrender.

In October, Napoleon beat a catastrophic retreat from Russia as the Tsar's troops and the Russian winter ground down his army until it was finally defeated in November crossing the Berezina river in what is now Belarus.

Defeat, defeat, I don't really think it's the word...

We won Borodino, Russians ran away.

Russian tactics was effective but ridiculous: ran away, burn your own towns, and wait the winter...

But they are right to open those kind of museum.
Our museums are the museums of immigration, the museum of moroccan culture, the museum of Algerian war...

BTW the Berezina, even if often wrongly depicted as a defeat, was a French tactical victory.

Here is a version of the 1812 Overture that you probably haven't heard. The 1812 Overture by Tchaikowski is the musical celebration of the French being kicked out of Russia. This is the first half, followed by the second. It really is the most beautiful choral music I'm aware of. Yes, it actually was a hymn as well as an overture. Enjoy.
