In late spring 2003, Nigel "Spud" Ely acquired a unique souvenir - a 25 lb (12 kg) chunk of bronze that once formed the rear end of a Saddam Hussein statue. After keeping it in his home for 8 years, Ely decided to auction it off for a military charity.
Now the Iraqi government wants it back, claiming it is a "cultural antiquity."
Ely, an ex-SAS soldier, now travels as a war artist and was in Baghdad to record the fall of the Hussein regime. While sketching the famous toppling of the giant Saddam statue in Firdos Square, he asked one of the US Marines if he could approach the statue.
The Marines gave him a sledgehammer and a crowbar and told him to help himself. Ely smashed off Saddam's rump and took it back to England, paying £385 in excess baggage fees to do so.
A couple of years ago he got angry over the treatment of wounded UK veterans and decided to auction off "Saddam's ass" to raise money for the British Defence Medicine's Patient Welfare Fund and the US Hope for the Warrior charity.
The auction came to a halt when the Iraqi government claimed the fragment, saying it is a cultural antiquity and comes under the UN control order making the smuggling of Iraqi cultural heritage a crime. Ely counters the fragment wasn't under Iraqi control, since it was given to him by the USMC and was under American control.
