Hundreds of angry protesters have booed French President Nicolas Sarkozy, forcing him to take shelter in a bar as he campaigned in the Basque country ahead of April's presidential election.
Some in the crowd then threw eggs at the bar guarded by riot police in the south-western town of Bayonne.
Mr Sarkozy described the protesters - Basque nationalists and supporters of his rival Socialist candidate Francois Hollande - as "hooligans".
He left the bar after about an hour.
The Basque region straddles south-western France and northern Spain.

An explanation is in order for those who haven't followed the by-play.
Jean Larteguy (nom de plume of Jean Pierre Lucien Osty) wrote several books about the French-Algerian war. One book, Les Centurions, was a bestseller in its time and is considered one of the best counter-insurgency novels ever written. It was later made into a major motion picture, The Lost Command, starring Anthony Quinn, Alain Delon, George Segal and Claudia Cardinale. The film, like the book, is noted for its unflinching realism and unapologetic portrayal of the vicious no-quarter fighting waged during insurgencies.
One of the central characters of both the book and the movie is Colonel Pierre-Noel Raspéguy, a Basque shepherd who has risen through the ranks by sheer guts and talent, somewhat to the dismay of his fellow officers.
In the movie, Col Raspeguy is played by Anthony Quinn. However, Larteguy confirms that Raspeguy is largely based on Col. Marcel Bigeard and his "paratroop mafia." |
