A vulnerable pensioner who died after a violent fall lay on the floor bleeding for up to ten minutes because a Muslim nurse was away praying, an inquest has heard.

Abdul Bhutto stayed on a prayer mat in an office when Dorothy Griffiths suffered serious injuries at Valley Park care home in Wombwell, South Yorkshire, witnesses claimed.

And once Mr Bhutto came to check the patient he said she was fine, only for her to take a turn for the worse four hours later, the inquest was told.

On October 24 last year Mrs Griffiths had fallen from her bed, cutting her head and suffering a gash to her hip.

She had been a resident at the home since developing advanced Alzheimer’s disease in 2009, and eventually died at Barnsley Hospital in November.

Carer Zoe Shaw told Sheffield Coroners Court she heard a ‘bang’ in the early hours of the morning and discovered the 89-year-old on the floor.

Worried for her welfare she ran to the office to request Mr Bhutto take a look at the elderly woman.

Weeping as she gave evidence she said she tried to call him and another member of staff told her she 'had to wait two minutes for him to finish' as he prayed.

But then Mrs Shaw told the inquest it was in fact 'between five and ten minutes because he was praying upstairs in the office on his prayer mat.'

That night Mrs Shaw said she put Mrs Griffiths, the widow of former Barnsley footballer Steve Griffiths, to bed at about 9.45pm.

At 4am, after hearing the fall, Mrs Shaw and another carer ran in to find her sitting on the floor hurt and asking to be helped up.

The pair chased to contact the senior nurse on duty, who they claim was Mr Bhutto, because the senior carer was not at work that night.

When he arrived Mrs Shaw said he checked Dorothy’s limbs, took her blood pressure and pulse while she was still on the floor, and told the staff to put her back in bed.

But worried she might fall again, Mrs Shaw instead washed her, got her dressed and took her to the office while she carried on filling in forms.

At about 5.45am she took her to the lounge and said she was ‘talking fine’ and walking around.

But less than two hours later, as the home’s other residents were brought into the lounge for tea, Mrs Griffiths was unresponsive and an ambulance was called.

She died a few weeks later.

Mr Bhutto failed to appear at a hearing this week - delaying its conclusion by two months.

Coroner Donald Coutts-Wood said he had contacted Mr Bhutto during a recess, when he denied being the duty nurse that night and that he had been there ‘on a course’.

A court summons was issued ordering his appearance at a second session on May 22.

Speaking after the inquest was adjourned, Dorothy’s daughter Jean David, 61, said: ‘We’re quite upset Mr Bhutto hadn’t appeared and that we’re having to come here again.

‘We would’ve liked it to have been done and dusted but we can’t leave it without his evidence.’

Mimosa, the firm which owns Valley Park, did not wish to comment until the inquest concluded.

We had a similar case last year. Some stupid nurse praying instead of treating an elderly patient in her home. This muslim will get away with it as well. Religion is a get out of jail free card. If a normal person had neglected their charges and duties, they'd have got sacked and prosecuted. Refuse to do your duties, but in the name of religion, and you get off Scot free.
