A British journalist saved from oncoming traffic by Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling is regretting taking to Twitter to boast of the incident and begging people not to tweet her about it.

While the actor may have rescued Laurie Penny from being run over by a New York cab he can do nothing to save her from the backlash against her smug tweet and the anti-American articles she has written afterwards.

It began when The Notebook actor came to Penny's rescue and she could not resist tweeting; 'I literally, LITERALLY just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. Literally. That actually just happened.’

But it seems the journalist, who writes for The Independent and The Guardian, is now desperately trying to backtrack on her excitable tweet which caused a media storm.

However, in Penny's ill-judged response to America's reaction to her brush with stardom she has criticised Americans for being 'insane' and 'losing all sense of perspective' in two separate articles and on Twitter.

Now Penny has seemingly quit Twitter declaring: ‘I’m leaving Twitter until all this bloody fuss dies down. Honestly, it would have been less trouble to get run over.’

While people were quick to praise the 31-year-old Canadian actor for stopping Penny walking into traffic on Tuesday night others have been quicker to slam Penny for her irritating tweets and articles about being rescued.

In an article on Gawker Penny urged people to stop over-reacting to her original tweet.

However, the piece - titled ‘Ryan Gosling saved me from a Speeding Car But There’s War In the Middle East so Everyone Calm Down’ - has only served to stoke the fire with critics mocking her self-righteous tone.

New York Magazine columnist Jonathan Chait described Penny as 'one of those leftie-types so sanctimonious they make you want to vote Republican out of sheer spite.'

Penny begins the article: 'It was a curious thing that happened to me on the way to somewhere else. I had just bought a nice pink wig to wear to a friend’s party. I was thinking about an article I’m writing about birth control and the importance of reproductive freedom to women’s rights, and I didn’t remember to look the right way.

An actor happened to be passing and stopped me from getting run over by a car. I said “thank you.” And that was that.'

The article has attracted hundreds of remarks labeling her ‘smug’, ‘self-righteous' and ‘sanctimonious.’

Another paragraph in the article reads: ‘Americans are very strange. They can and do hyperventilate about the most everyday happenings as if they are the most important thing in the world, and then they act completely normal when public conversations are had about war on Iran and war on women's bodies and when Rick Santorum is considered a serious presidential candidate.'

Fellow journalist Chait slams her logic writing in the New York Magazine: 'Of course, if we follow this strict logic of moral utility to its conclusion, maybe we should be scolding Gosling for saving Laurie Penny rather than shoving her in front of the car, harvesting her organs and donating them to terminally ill children in Bangladesh.'

The article ends with Penny objecting to the role that she has been cast in.

She writes: 'I really do object to being framed as the ditzy damsel in distress in this story... as a feminist, a writer, and a gentlewoman of fortune, I refuse to be cast in any sort of boring supporting female role.'

Penny, who has been based in New York for the last two months, has also written an article in The Independent arguing that the reaction to her tweet on Tuesday night was confirmation that Americans had 'lost all sense of perspective’.

Unsurprisingly, Americans have taken to the internet accusing Penny of double standards with her irritating tweet starting the story in the first place.

One comment beneath her Gawker article reads: 'The next time you decide to write a blog post criticizing Americans love of celebrity and throwing around declarations of feminism perhaps you should do a little self reflection. A little self awareness goes a long way.’

Earlier in the week Penny tweeted “EVERYBODY NEEDS TO CALM DOWN ABOUT RYAN GOSLING NOW” and “This whole experience is teaching me a great deal about American cultural production. This place is insane.”

She then updated her Twitter profile to read: Author, journalist, feminist, reprobate. Please do not talk to me about Ryan Gosling, thanks.

In the last few decades there was anti Americanism. That was mainly because our PM's, most noticeably thatcher and blair, who seemed to be stuck up the Americans Presidents arse. Putting American interests above Britain's.

A similar anti EU bias came about for the same reason. Thatcher handed over 75% of our lawmaking, 75% of our sovereignty to Brussels in exchange for a single market that is still not in place and has cost us at least 1 million jobs. The electorate, instead of blaming the politicians that sold us out, instead blamed the countries and institutions involved. Two years ago, we as an electorate, finally grew up and judged politicians by their actions, rather than their rhetoric, which we had been doing for at least 30 years. It has transformed British politics and society. Only the minuscule fraction of people who hate just about anything now rant about America or the EU.


As for the newspapers. They are owned by a handful of multi billionaires who have their own political agenda. They absolutely in no way reflect British society. In fact they are inexorably linked to the disastrous policies of Thatcher and Blair and their circulation is plummeting. They helped bankrupt the nation and will never be forgiven. They'll be too busy trying to stay afloat, to be messing in another countries electoral process.

Anti Americanism is dead. Anti politicians, who would sell out their own country for a lecture tour and millions is alive and kicking, finally.
