A Texas couple has won a landmark lawsuit and been awarded more than $13 million in damages.

Mark and Rhonda Lesher, formerly of Clarksville, were accused of sexually assaulting a client. They were tried and acquitted of the charges in 2009. But then accusations of sexual perversions and molestations, drug dealing and other criminal behavior began appearing online. Over the next year, more than 25,000 libelous statements were posted.

The Leshers finally had enough, and sued.

""This was clearly a vendetta... We originally sued 178 John and Jane Does, and it all came down to two IP addresses."

Shannon and Gerald Coyel, and Charlie and Pat Doescher of Kennedale, who worked for the Coyels -- were ordered to pay $13.78 million to the Leshers after jurors saw more than 800 of the scurrilous accusations. The Lesher's attorney, Meagan Hassan, said:

"No one who has ever read the comments has argued that they were reasonable or rational. This is a good case to show just how bad things can get online."

The case shows that those who libel others online are not aware that they can be traced through their comments. Most service agreements that ISPs use - which few people actually read - prohibit the posting of any "libelous, slanderous or knowingly false" statement.

Peter Vogel, an attorney who specializes in internet law, said:

"This case proves that you just can't say bad things about someone without any consequences. I never put anything in an e-mail or posts that I would not want a jury to see."

I remember when Prescott first invented the libel about you being a wife beating felon. Apparently there are a lot of people you could sue for damages.
