Fukushima Reactor 4 Release Would Doom Western USA

If Reactor 4 at Fukushima becomes unstable and releases 10 times the amount of Cesium-137 (CS-137) released at the time of the Chernobyl nuclear accident, then the prevailing winds could carry it all the way to the Western USA – that means California.

On April 30, 2012, 72 NGO organizations sent a request to the United Nations and the Japanese government urging fast-action to stabilize the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel. Experts in the nuclear field from both Japan and the world endorsed the letter.

The letter contained warnings that the damaged Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool contains Cesium-137. If that pool were exposed to an earthquake or other event that drained that pool, then the result could be a catastrophic radiological fire. The letter urged the United Nations to create a Nuclear Safety Summit to find a solution to the problem of the Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool. The proposal stated that the United Nations should create an independent assessment team on Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4 and organize international assistance to stabilize the unit's spent nuclear fuel and prevent the impending catastrophe. The letters were delivered to both the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. The second letter asked that Japan officially ask for the United Nations' help.

Numbering in excess of 10,000, the spent fuel assemblies at the Fukushima Daiichi plant lie in pools vulnerable to future earthquakes. The radioactivity is around 85-times more long-lived than the radioactivity released at Chernobyl.

Fukushima still spewing massive radiation plumes; America in ‘huge trouble,’ says nuclear expert

During a recent Congressional delegation trip to Japan, Oregon Senator Ron Wyden witnessed with his own eyes the horrific aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, which we have heard very little about from the media in recent months. The damage situation was apparently so severe, according to his account, that he has now written a letter to Ichiro Fujisaki, Ambassador of Japan, petitioning for more to be done, and offering any additional support and assistance that might help contain and resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

The letter, which many experts see as the ominous writing on the wall for the grave severity of the circumstances, offers a disturbing glimpse into what is really going on across the Pacific Ocean that the mainstream media is apparently ignoring. While referencing the fact that all four of the affected reactors are still “badly damaged,” Sen. Wyden seems to hint in his letter that Reactor 4, which has reportedly been on the verge of collapse for many months now, could be nearing catastrophic implosion.

Imminent collapse of Reactor 4 could create a mass extinction event of both humans and animals

According to Christina Consolo, an award-winning biomedical photographer and host of Nuked Radio, Reactor 4 has remained in such bad shape that even a very small earthquake could quickly level the building, sending the fuel from more than 1,500 unused fuel rods into the environment. And with Reactor 4 still filled with the highest levels of radioactive MOX and other fuels, the consequences of this potential collapse could be far worse than anything that has happened thus far as a result of the earthquake and tsunami.

“[S]itting at the top of [Reactor 4], in a pool that is cracked, leaking, and precarious even without an earthquake, are 1,565 fuel rods (give or take a few), some of them ‘fresh fuel’ that was ready to go into the reactor on the morning of March 11 when the earthquake and tsunami hit,” writes Consolo. “If they are MOX fuel, containing six percent plutonium, one fuel rod has the potential to kill 2.89 billion people.”

Sen. Wyden is also asking U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Gregory Jaczko to assess how much additional assistance their agencies might be willing to provide to help Japan, and the entire world, avoid a nuclear catastrophe of Biblical proportions.

“The scope of damage to the plants and to the surrounding area was far beyond what I expected and the scope of the challenges to the utility owner, the government of Japan, and to the people of the region are daunting,” wrote Sen. Wyden in his letter, dated April 16, 2012. “The precarious status of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear units and the risk presented by the enormous inventory of radioactive materials and spent fuel in the event of further earthquake threats should be of concern to all and a focus of greater international support and assistance.”

Sweet... I guess this is what it takes for some to understand that we need new alternate source of energy! :?

It should never have been built in the first place. On the Pacific Rim, for fucks sake! A major fault line. Got any on the Pacific coast? :D

Very old technology. Big deal. We have plenty on the Pacific Coast. San Onofre is right on the ocean north of San Diego.

Hyperbole much ?

one fuel rod has the potential to kill 2.89 billion people.

That's if you can find 2.89 billion people to stand in a line and ingest a tiny amount of radioactive material each ...

I suggest burning deluded eco-fanatics to generate power. There is ample supply of a regenerative resource and the truly amazing part: the more power you consume, the less power you will need.

If the Western USA is doomed couldn't Americans just preventively flee to Japan, where the Japanese are cleaning up, rebuilding and going by their daily lives? Does that sound weird to you?

"Imminent collapse of Reactor 4 could create a mass extinction event of both humans and animals"

I guess the vegetables on the left coast, including Kalifornia's governor Jerry Brown, wouldn't be killed.

When I went to school, humans were animals. We've lost alot of ground since then. Humans can no longer be "animals" because that would be racist.

Since you're so intent on humping my leg whenever I post, I challenge you to find *one* post of mine that qualifies as "fear-mongering" on the subject of global warming. Failing that, picture yourself limping away with your tail between your legs after I rammed my boot in your arse.

You're such a bad-ass.

The entire fraud of global warming is built on fear mongering.
Now get back to frightening people about nuclear power, acid rain or fracking.

The question is whether you get your cancer with 40 or 50 or 70 or 80. The more radiation there is around you, the sooner you will develop cancer.

ASPRIN. :?

On the other hand; maybe my preference to entomb the fuck up is not such a bad idea? :P

1. Seal the place off from the sea. ENSURE NO LEAKS.
Build a set of 3 separation walls across the sea defence line. Tsunami-proof.
2. Build a giant concrete wall around the plant. 10 Meters thick. Install underground pipes 1m diameter. 4 sets. Interconnected.
3. Same time, Build a cooling lake nearby; at least 150m x 150m x 25m. Sealed (Concrete lid 3m thick). Construct/Install suppression/baffle chamber alongside (connected to cooling pool) about half that size.
4. Fill radioactive plants walled area with water; connect pipes and cover top of the walled plant with giant concrete lids.
5. Leave a space 50 meters around the whole plant and build another wall bigger than the last. 10 meters thick. 10 meters higher than the sealed plant.
6. Get all the really dangerous radioactive soil in the region and cover the sealed plant with that (between teh two layers of wall.
7. Once filled; construct another sealed lid on the top 5m thick.
8. Pump water from inside the chambers slowly through the cooling pool and re-circulate.
9. Ensure top up points; and access chamber through quad sealed doors to baffle chamber; cooling pool and under outer and inner walls to sealed plant.
10. Wait 10,000 years.

Did I forget anything, beside invoicing a bill?

Have mercy for me, I live nearby a nuclear reactor (Gravelines).

Boston was not so far from the Seabrook reactor. We went surfing there !

I've thought about moving to Idaho, but we would miss the geography of our location. Rugged mountains, the big trees, ocean, rivers.... All of that within 5 miles of the house.
My wife lived in Chapel Hill for a bit. She liked it there. Said it was very pretty. But she missed the ocean.

We're getting a little bit of crap washing up on the beaches in northern Ca. But the shit isn't glowing, so I'm not worried about it. The pacific ocean is huge and will dilute the radiation down to a safe level. Sure the radiation may be measurable, but just that. the radiation I get from sleeping next to my wife is measurable, also. Doesn't mean she'll give me cancer.

Tepco relied on wishful thinking. Look where it got them.

Does anyone agree that the week before this event my posts on this site about going geo-thermal were legitimate; as Nuclear plants were not calculating the risk/costs for dealing with and cleaning up the radioactive material such plants cause?

Or heads up arses again?
