Mexico finds cartels making fake military uniforms

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexican marines say they have found a clandestine workshop in northern Mexico where presumed drug traffickers made copies of military uniforms.

The navy says hundreds of camouflage pants, shirts and vests were found at the workshop in the northern border city of Piedras Negras., across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas.

The uniforms are part of an effort by criminal gangs to damage the reputation of the marine corps, the navy said Thursday.

Drug gangs in Mexico have also used fake military uniforms to set up road blocks and carry out kidnappings.

Marines acting on an anonymous tip also found sewing machines and other supplies when they raided the workshop Monday.

In related raids, marines found drugs, guns and money at other locations in Piedras Negras.

This is one of the reasons I won't travel in Mexico anymore, though parts of it are just spectacularly beautiful.

You can be stopped at a police or military checkpoint and they look GI by Mexican standards, but you have no idea. It is particularly unnerving when you have a beautiful blonde (ex wife) and 2 beautiful little girls in tow.

And as I've said many times. If - if - the MexFed government ever gets to the point where they might actually break the hold of the cartels they will tool on down to the nearest resort and grab a bunch of gringo tourists and line them up.

And they have told the Mex gov't as much.

Corruption is what allows for this shit to happen. I have run into a few fake checkpoints myself. I got through because I was not a target for the ambush they were setting up. Usually, the target shows up, gets iced and the check´point vanishes leaving the bodies behind or the victims are taken to be tortured and killed somewhere else. I still think Mexico is safer than many US cities.

... been all mover Mexico way back when. Yes, get away from the border and it gets better. Caught typhoid at Uruapin, going to see the active volcano at Paracutin in '51.' ... Think I caught it from the ice in an upscale restaurant in San Louis Potosi. Had the Aztec-two-step a few times, too. Went to a lady dentist in Acuna last year and had 22 teeth (full mouth) removed. She did a great job, no pain, not much bleeding. Three city policemen were killed by the Zetas while I was there.

Nope, ... not going back again. ... crazy, maybe, but not that crazy. Fukum.
