EU, the world's largest producer of passenger cars - The EU produces 5,5 times as many cars as USA! (karma: 4)  en>fr fr>en

I have looked at the numbers, and thought i would share them with you. We have already seen how the EU is the largest economy in the world, the largest producer of planes, the largest producer of helicopters and sends more than 50 % of commercial satellites worldwide into orbit every year, but in this thread I have looked at car production:

In 2010 EU produced 15 million passenger cars, while the US only produced 2,7 million:

Image hotlink - 'http://inserteyeroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/crying-baby-300x300.jpg'
Americans on this site often start crying, saying it's unfair to compare the mighty EU to just USA alone, so let's see how the "North American Free Trade Agreement" (NAFTA) does, even though it's not a an internal market, as the EU:
Image hotlink - 'http://www.eucitizens.eu/pictures/trade/eucarproduction.png'
- As you can see, the EU produce 5,5 times as many passenger cars as USA, and 3 times as many as USA, Canada and Mexico combined (NAFTA)...in short, the EU is the world's largest producer of passenger cars in 2010...

Funny how you put a picture of a truck in your photo but only mention production of passenger cars. How conveeeeeeenient.

Oh dear, looks like GM, Ford, Chrysler actually makes far more vehicles than all the EU combined. Let us not also forget that trucks and commercial vehicles are far more profitable even than the overpriced European passenger cars.

Laughable for two reasons:

1) You only list WINTER Olympic medals because you know that will tend to bias towards EU teams. Sorry, we don't do a lot of luging here in the States.

2) The EU not only has a much larger population than the US, it also has how many teams competing whereas the US only has one in any given sport? Can we have a team for every state in the United States? That would really be cool. Even a horse that is a massive favorite is not going to win the majority of races when going up against a dozen other horses.

If we take motor vehicle production China is number one - and EU number two, not USA. Try to add just 3 EU countries together in your own numbers and you will see that EU is still larger than USA. (USA 8,400.000 and just 3 EU countries: Germany 6,300.000 + Spain 2,300,000 and France 2,300,000 = 10,900,000)

Ok, here is my view, take basket ball for example: The EU is bigger, so lets say the EU has 27 Good players, and the US 12. A team has 5 players.

Let say that the each country in the EU (27) has 1 good player and rest are crap.

Result. The US can take its 12 good players and put in one dream team, and the EU has good players, but these players are divided into 27 team, so EU has 27 teams with one good player and rest are crap.

- USA would win easily...

Right. And Tata owns Jaguar and Land Rover. GM owns Opel. The chinks own Volvo. Malaysians own Lotus. Ford owns a good chunk of Mazda.

Total number of vehicles produced is what matters. It doesn't matter if it is a passenger vehicle and it doesn't matter WHERE it is produced.

Buick was the number one selling passenger car in China in 2011--about 250,000 vehicles sold. Chevy Cruze was number three.

Not sure where you're going with that, but I'm not seeing how "GM, Ford, Chrysler actually makes far more vehicles than all the EU combined", from that Wikipedia link you posted, that's 15M vehicles from the USA threes vs 19.5M for the German, French and Italian brands. And if it really doesn't matter where vehicles are produced, then yeah, Chrysler ain't quite 'USA' anymore.

Edit:
Right. And Tata owns Jaguar and Land Rover. GM owns Opel. The chinks own Volvo. Malaysians own Lotus. Ford owns a good chunk of Mazda.

Opel is counted as part of GM's. If we count Chrysler as Fiat, that's 13.5M for the US, 21M for the big EU three. You don't want to add Ford's small share of Mazda, Renault owns almost half of Nissan.

Edit: While I'm at it, it's only Volvo Cars that's been bought, the Volvo entry in that Wikipedia page is for heavy vehicles, that's Volvo proper.

Alright, the point is that EU Army is making it sound like the European companies exceed US production by 550%. The reality is that they are not so far apart. I will admit surprise that when you add up all those smaller companies that they come out on top.

By Manufacturer:
GM, Ford, Chrysler: approx 15,042,000

Volkswagen, Renault, BMW, Volvo, Daimler AG, PSA Peugeot Citroën and Fiat: Approx 19,685,000

Alright, I agree it's not really fair comparing "passenger cars" where pickup trucks are excluded as "light commercial vehicles" but station wargons and the like purchased in Europe for much the same use are not.
