Man's call to report missing crowbar leads to home-invasion charges


A man who called 911 about a missing crowbar ended up confessing to two Lauderdale Lakes home invasion robberies that were committed with — a crowbar — police said.

Nathaniel Lee Smith, 29, of Lauderdale Lakes, apparently dropped the crowbar at one of the crime scenes after a resident fended him off by spraying window cleaner at him, officials said.

Smith reportedly fled empty-handed, then called 911 to say someone had broken into his home and stolen his stuff. Among the missing items? A crowbar and a skullcap matching the one used during the two robberies, investigators said.

"A small crowbar, a miniature crowbar, uh, my black skully was with my book bag, uh, my wallet is missing, everything," Smith is heard saying in a 911 tape released Wednesday.

Investigators with the Broward Sheriff's Office looked into Smith's claim, but didn't buy it, said agency spokesman Mike Jachles. Smith then admitted he made up the tale to cover for the crowbar and skullcap he had left behind, Jachles said.

The first robbery happened at 11:44 a.m. Sunday at the Hawaiian Gardens condominium, in the 5100 block of Northwest 35th Court. A gunman with a crowbar walked through an open door and ordered residents to the floor. The man rummaged through the unit, stealing jewelry, cash, cellphones and a laptop, officials said. No one was hurt.

The second robbery was at 9:47 a.m. Tuesday at a condo it the 3400 block of Northwest 52nd Avenue. The residents, Jacques Baillargeon and Louise Morin, were relaxing with their front door open when a gunman carrying a crowbar stormed in.

Baillargeon, 66, surprised the gunman by spraying him with the window cleaner, Jachles said. The gunman swung his crowbar. Baillargeon blocked the swing and disarmed the suspect, who fled.

Smith, who faces charges including kidnapping and armed home invasion, was being held at the Broward Main Jail without bond.
