American high school student refuses to swear loyalty to Mexico
Brenda Brinsdon, a 15-year-old sophomore in McAllen, Texas, is suing the McAllen ISD. Supported by the Thomas More Law Center, she is alleging that she was punished for refusing to recite the pledge to the flag and the national anthem. She claims she was given a failing grade, and then forced to sit in class over a period of several days and listen to other students recite the pledge to the flag.
What makes this case unique, however, is the fact that Brinsdon is an American, in an American high school, who is being punished for refusing to recite the pledge to the Mexican flag or sing the Mexican national anthem..
Brinsdon, who is the child of an American father and an immigrant Mexican mother, is fluent in both English and Spanish, and is proud of her Mexican heritage. But she considers herself 100% true-blooded American, and when told to recite the Mexican pledge and sing the Mexican anthem, she balked.
The teacher, Reyna Santos, requires all students in her Spanish class to recite and sing the Mexican pledge & anthem, and refused to let Brinsdon recite the American Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish.
Video of the class shows students in the class standing up, arms straight out and palms down, reciting the pledge to the flag of a foreign country.
Ironically, McAllen ISD has a policy that prohibits a school from compelling students to recite the American Pledge of Allegiance or reading from the Declaration of Independence if the student "has a conscientious objection to the recitation.”
