Remember "peak oil?"

Several doom-and-gloom "analysts" (including some on this forum) became convinced that the world had reached the limits of oil production, and that "sometime soon" oil production would decline.

Wrong!

World oil production has actually increased in the past few years, and guess who is leading the way?

That's right; the good ol' US of A. Thanks to new technology and a renewed interest in exploring previously unrecoverable oil, the US is set to overtake both Russia and Saudi Arabia as the world's leading oil producer. The International Energy Agency predicts that the US will reach self-sufficiency in the next few years (sometime between in 2017 - 2030) and become a net energy exporter.

Interestingly, predictions that the world was running out of oil date back many, many years - to the 1920's, in fact. "Peak oil" doomsday scenarios cropped up again in the 1970's and in the early 2000's. In every case, the doomsayers have been proven wrong.

Economist M. A. Adelman explained it best after the "great oil shortage" of the 1970's.

"Oil reserves ... are no gift of nature. They are a growth of knowledge, paid for by heavy investment."

New resources are exploited only because crude oil is expansive enough to make such exploitations profitable.

It isn't a victory by itself, but a depressing evidence of our dependency on a single commodity.

We either should stop consuming oil or bomb every OPEC countries that doesn't write from left to right.

Hydrocarbon oil is being continuously created by heat and pressure deep below the surface. Old oil fields are gradually re-filling and some are even back in production. Dyno-sewers and creepy-crawlies didn't create oil. ... Coal, maybe, but not oil. ... Also, CO2 is NOT a pollutant. CO2-fed plants give us life sustaining oxygen.
